High-Resolution Portable Audio Recorder, Black, R-07

Sadly I no longer have this recorder. I returned it to Amazon because I bought new and they supplied me with a unit with scratches on the screen and a broken SD card slot unfortunately. However, I have had this recorder amongst my collection on two separate occasions and it’s great. It’s easy to use, the inbuilt mics are high quality, and handling noise is minimal which means you can genuinely hand hold it whilst recording if you are careful. I have a lot of these recorders. I have a bit of a problem with buying more and more of these. This is the only reason I didn’t get another R07, because I already have a lot of others and I decided I don’t need another in the end. However, do miss it I have to admit. Having a lot of experience with these handhelds and audio equipment in general, I wanted to share some points on this recorder. I tend to use these things for sampling and field recording so you know what my application is. The price is great and it fits in the hand really nicely. It captures sounds that are a good reflection of what is really there. What I mean by this is that there isn’t much colouring on the recordings (like excessive bass or too much presence). The audio has a very natural sound, which is great for tweaking in post production with EQ if you fancy it. Battery life is good and allows for a good amount of recording. I particularly like the built in Bluetooth - it always worked perfectly with my iPhone 14. I also found that there was a little app for the R07 for controlling the device via Bluetooth from your Apple Watch if you have one. This worked fairly well, but did have a tendency to freeze on the watch face so I’d recommend using Bluetooth control with your phone for no issues. However, it is handy to be able to control it too with a watch. I have the Sony A10 and OM Systems that both also have built in Bluetooth but, as far as I’m aware, there’s no option to use an Apple Watch with those so it was a nice little extra with the R07. There’s a lot of options and formats for sample rates and bit rates etc which you can select based on what is best for you and your purposes. Honestly, my only gripe with the Roland R07 is that I have quite large fingers and found it difficult to get the microsd in and out of the unit. This may explain why the one I received already had a broken micro SD card door. Other than that, I don’t have anything negative at all to say on the R07. It’s a good size, good quality and pretty robust piece of kit. The R05 (the predecessor to the R07) was metal and felt even more sturdy. I missed the metal from the R07 I have to say as the R05 just felt more solid overall and i wish Roland had used metal on the R07 too and it provides extra strength and also helps reduce handling noise even further. Having said that, the R07 is still brilliant quality - I just missed the metal 🤘 The self noise of the device is OK. I’ve heard far worse in other devices I’ve used. As always l, it’s just about having a good signal to noise ratio to hide the noise. You can also remove some noise in post with a bit of light EQ or other plugins or just keep the gain as low as possible and record as close to the source as you can. I have also used external microphones plugged into this with plugin power via the 3.5mm mic input (Clippy em272’s) and this is as a great experience and provides some even better results than the inbuilt mics are capable of. I am hoping the Roland will follow on from the R07 with a 32 bit Float version sometime soon. That would be sensational and would be an instant purchase for me regardless of how many of these I currently have.

Excellent recording device. It records really well. The only thing i’d change about it is the GIANT red light that constantly shines when you start to record. It’s kind of a give away to security at gigs if you’re spotted with it. I’ve put some tape over it to dull it down it a bit. The presets that are programmed work well. If you go manually, just remember to change the input audio level because it’s set to zero! Otherwise you’ll be recording silence. Guess who learned the hard way?

Poor instructions, app is not very well done, once you can figure out how to use it, it’s a brilliant little device.

I use Roland Recorders - I've had my Roland R-26 (second) after an accident with first - such a shame Roland didn't keep the R-26 going - the R-07 excellent, small - would have been better with some improvements but it suits me for gathering Atmos and I can use my other mics should they be needed.

Absolute waste of money. Would have been ok in the 1990s, but the display is poor, the menu layout is unhelpful, the onboard speakers are useless, I could go on. The only reason I didn't return it was because I trashed the box, then I was really busy, so never got round to it. Take my word for it DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY

Much better built than anything Zoom has ever produced. Better mic amps too. Such solid build-quality. Impressive sound quality with built-in mics, sadly no balanced XLR input for external mics but there wouldn't be room. So easy to use. I use it as a reserve recorder for oral history recordings, but have also made radio packages too and gathered sound effects in the field for documentaries. The main thing is you can carry it at all times and not worry about its build quality causing failure. Better battery life than Zoom H1.

£170 & it doesn't come with the specialist cable to transfer files. Similar micro USB cables used for charging devices won't work.

町中の雑踏などふとした瞬間にフィールドレコーディングするために購入。 これまでタスカムのポータキャプチャーを使っていたが大きすぎて常に持ち出すわけにはいかなかったが、これなら嵩張らないので持ち出しやすい。別売りの純正風防は必須だが、それをつけてもそんなに目立たないので町中での録音に重宝してます。入門用にオススメ。

Pues, ha sido una maravilla. No tengo queja alguna. Además, la pilas le duran mucho. Enciende rápido, el Bluetooth funciona bastante bien. Es súper intuitiva… pequeña… ligera.. una maravilla.

Quality is nice whereas it's body cabinet disappointed me because it is handy item so palm held not met comfort due to its lower material plastic body otherwise it's performance fine again it is a high cost product and not easy to get it's price 24K is to invest for record purpose not affordable where now mobile device has all options and within 20K price. Like me ofcourse no such mad to buy this

これまでR-09を５人編成バンドで10年以上使い続けてきました。最近SDカードの認識が不安定となり録音失敗も何回か出てきました。(>_<) そこで代替品を各メーカー探しましたが、やはり実績のROLANDからこのR-07を選びました。 いつもは外部マイクを使用しますが内蔵マイクでもしっかりいい音で録れています。 何と言ってもステージ上のスマホから各種コントロール出来るのが最大の利点です。自分で演奏しながら録音レベル調整が出来るのがありがたいです。 本体モニタースピーカーはオマケ程度の機能ですがもう少しボリュームが欲しいです。

Habe lange gehadert ob ich dem japanischen Marktführer Zoom oder dem günstigeren Pendant aus den USA Tascam mein Geld hinterherwerfen soll. Bei Zoom überzeugen mich die Funktionen und der Ton, bei Tascam die Bedienung und der Preis. Ich bin bei Japan geblieben, habe mich dann aber ganz spontan für den Außenseiter Roland R-07 entschieden. Ausschlaggebend war neben der weitaus kompakteren Bauweise des R-07, dafür der Fakt, dass Roland mit den eingebauten Mikrofonen die geringsten Grundgeräusche erzeugt, sogar noch weniger als die vom zoom H4n pro. Ich nutze den Audio Recorder in der Hauptsache als Mikrofonersatz an meiner GoPro9, deren MediaMod alleine kein gutes Mikrofon bietet. Zusätzlich und hauptsächlich aber möchte ich Mixtapes im Club- und Festivalbetrieb mit dem Gerät aufnehmen, weswegen ich kein externes Mikrofon gewählt habe. Ich kann also nichts zu Instrumenten-Aufnahme oder dem Gitarren-Tuner sagen. Design Der R-07 hält sich gegenüber dem Zoom H4n oder dem Tascam DR-40X mit seinem Design eher zurück und versucht es weniger technisch als mehr ansehnlich/modern. Dazu passen auch die drei Farben weiß, schwarz und rot. Die Mikrofone verstecken sich fast schon im Gehäuse selbst, wo sie bei der Konkurrenz als Hauptelement prominent oben am Gerät platziert sind. Der Roland ist weitaus kleiner und kompakter als die Konkurrenz. Das sehr tiefe Einschubfach der SD-Karte verschmilzt im Design. Es ist eine Stativaufnahme 1/4" unten am Gerät vorhanden. Ohne Stativ lässt sich das Gerät aber auch auf den Tisch legen wo es mit 4 Füßchen nicht direkt auf der Unterseite liegt. Die Mikrofone sind dabei leicht angewinkelt, so dass eine Aufnahme am Tisch (z.B. als Diktiergerät oder Gesangsaufnahme) erleichtert werden kann. Funktionen Grundsätzlich unterscheidet sich der R-07 rein technisch nicht in Vielem von seiner Konkurrenz. Es fehlen ihm aber offensichtlich XLR-Mikrofoneingänge! Dadurch fällt er für viele Musiker aber auch Podcaster schlichtweg durch. Ein externes Mikrofon lässt sich so nur am Line/Mic-In zwischen den Mikrofonen über 3,5mm Klinke anstecken. Praktisch finde ich die "Doppelaufnahme", bei der derselbe Ton in 2 unterschiedlichen Pegeln aufgenommen wird um Clipping in der Nachbearbeitung aussteuern zu können. Die Appanbindung brauche ich persönlich (noch) nicht, aber ein Kabelloses Pegeln finde ich, gerade wenn man sich selbst nicht am Ort der Aufnahme befindet, aber sehr praktisch! Auch die Möglichkeit Bluetooth Lautsprecher zum Pegeln/Abhören nutzen zu können finde ich gut Soweit mir bekannt kann das Gerät auch einige Sekunden vor Aufnamestart aufnehmen, damit man nichts verpasst. Diese Funktion habe ich nicht getestet erscheint mir aber als sinnvoll. Der eingebaute Lautsprecher dient, wenn überhaupt, der Kontrolle ob überhaupt etwas aufgenommen wurde , denn er ist sehr leise. Leider verfügt der R-07 nicht über einen USB-C Anschluss, sondern nur über Micro-USB. Neben der Versorgung über Kabel lassen sich auch zwei AA-Batterien oder Akkus einsetzen. Der R-07 bietet ein Metronom und eine Stimmgerät. Er bietet Low-Cut Filter um Störgeräusche wie Wind (Humming) direkt bei Aufnahme zu filtern. Bedienung Die Bedienelemente und das Menü erinnern stark an das der Tascam Geräte, auch wenn alles bei Tascam noch etwas intuitiver von der Hand geht. Das Layout der Front beinhaltet Macros zu verschiedenen Aufnahmemodi, aber keine Kürzel um Dateien schnell zu löschen oder umzubenennen! Warum der "Rehearsal" Button über allem prangt ist mir nicht klar. Dieser führt zur automatischen Pegelung, was eigentlich niemand möchte(?!).Die prominenten Lautstärkeregler auf der Front finde ich aber sehr gut. Das D-Pad erleichtert die Bedienung in Menüs und ist, zumindest mir, sehr viel geläufiger als ein Rädchen oder seitliche Knöpfe, die man im dunkeln nicht findet. Der Hold (Sperren) Knopf sperrt das ganze System, Ein und Ausschalten ist damit auch nicht mehr möglich. Gefällt! Es gibt neben der Bluetoothanzeige eine Clippinganzeige und oben auf dem Gerät eine sichtbare Aufnahmeleuchte. Das ist mir, gerade im dunklen Clubbetrieb (und sicherlich auch bei Konzerten) schon wichtig. Die Aufnahme funktioniert, wie bei Tascam, erst nach zweimaligem Drücken der Rec-Taste, nach einem "Standby-Modus", in dem man auch erst den Pegel sehen kann. Ich weiß dass dieses doppelte Bestätigen viele Nutzer von Tascam stört. Ich finde es praktisch, da so ungewollte Aufnahmen vermieden werden. Schade ist, dass ein Pegeln nicht direkt funktioniert, sondern erst im "Standby". Ton Leider bin ich tontechnisch nicht all zu bewandert. Daher muss hier eine laienhafte Beschreibung reichen: Den aufgenommenen Ton empfinde ich als sehr klar. Es gibt nur wenig Grundrauschen, welches aber ab 70% deutlicher hörbar wird. Über diesen Wert nehme ich persönlich nicht auf. Die Mikrofone sind nicht gerichtet und nehmen Umgebungsgeräusche mit auf. Ich nehme daher an, das die Mikrofone omnidirektional aufnehmen (Kugel) und in AB Position gerichtet sind. Die Konkurrenz nimmt meist in XY Position auf, außer man greift zu Tascam bei denen man die Positionen ändern kann. Ich hätte lieber eine XY Position, komme aber auch mit der AB Anordnung zurecht. Bei Aufnahmen über den Line-In ist diese Position natürlich egal. Es gibt leider nur 1 eingebauten Effekt - Reverb. Fazit: Der Roland R-07 bietet technisch vieles, was die Konkurrenz auch bietet. Ist dabei preislich beim Zoom H4n angesiedelt und sieht nicht nur etwas moderner aus als die Mitbewerber, sondern ist weitaus kompakter. Die App-Anbindung ist ein Novum und passt in das Jahr 2021. Wer sich heute noch sträubt kabellose Technik einzusetzen wird es sicherlich in der nächsten Gerätegeneration, auch bei Tascam (DR-22WL!) und Zoom nützlich finden oder sich zumindest nicht daran stören. Man muss es ja nicht nutzen! Das Grundrauschen des R-07 ist dabei, meiner Meinung nach geringer als bei den Mitbewerbern. Für den Roland R-07 sprechen also: Kompakte Bauweise, Design, Bedienbarkeit, Ton, Appanbindung und Nutzung von Bluetooth-Boxen. Er glänzt im DJ-Bereich durch die Möglichkeit 2 Pegel parallel aufzunehmen. Gegen den R-07 sprechen die fehlenden XLR Anschlüsse, die festgelegte AB-Position der Mikrofone und die fehlende Möglichkeit die internen Mikrofone parallel mit einem extern angeschlossenen aufnehmen zu können. Wer eingebaute Effekte benötigt ist hier leider auch falsch. Auch beim Zubehör gibt sich Roland schlicht. Es wird neben einer Tasche noch eine deadcat angeboten, die aber leider das gesamte Display verdeckt. Wer beim Ton etwas Einbußen hinnehmen kann und/oder Geld sparen möchte wird mit dem Tascam DR-40X glücklich. Wer das komplette Paket will und mit der etwas umständlicheren (meine Meinung) Bedienung klar kommt, keine schnellen Startupzeiten benötigt und keine Line-Level Signale über XLR aufnehmen möchte greift zum H4n pro. Kurzum: Der Roland R-07 glänzt durch seine Fülle an Funktionen auf kleinstem Raum, gepaart mit modernem Design. Er ist trotz seiner "smart features" aber leider noch eine eher unbeliebte Wahl bei Audio Recordern weil ihm essentielle Aufnahmemöglichkeiten über XLR und 6,3mm Klinke für Mikrofone und Instrumente fehlen. Trotz dessen macht er sehr gute Aufnahmen und kann durch seiner zurückhaltende Optik und die Möglichkeiten der Fernsteuerung per Smartphone z.B. auch als Diktiergerät oder zum Mitschnitt von Konferenzen/Sitzungen im Businessbereich oder auch in der Schule/Campus genutzt werden. Damit schließt der Roland R-07 die Lücke zwischen reinen Diktiergeräten für Business und Schule (wie Sony ICD-UX570B) und professionellem Field bzw. Audio-Recorder (wie Zoom H4n Pro) und ist zusätzlich durch die Fern-Pegelbarkeit und die Simultanaufnahme von 2 Pegeln gerade für den DJ oder Producer-Bereich interessant. Ich hoffe ich konnte euch helfen zu entscheiden ob der Roland R-07 Recorder etwas für euch ist.
