For discharging capacitors.... NOT BATTERIES
So its important before ordering this you know what you are buying. It is not designed to discharge batteries, it is for capacitors. And for anyone that works around high value capacitors, particularly in valve amps will know they store some properly nasty power for some time, potentially damaging you and the equipment. Before working on any circuit containing a higher storage capacitor - and definitely before touching one with a soldering iron they need to be discharged What is it? Essentially a big resistor inside a case that allows safe discharge of the cap. And this is the device to do it. In the past I have just used a big old resistor (which is exactly what this is). Opening the case you wont find clever circuitry in there...its a simple idea that just works. I like is the resistor is in a nice black case and the LEDS are a useful indicator. Standard probes supplied are decent too and make the entire job much easier. discharge batteries: NO unless the resistance required is known discharge a capacitor before working on a circuit: YES

How long?
This i thought would be a quick few seconds and done. Sadly that's not the case. After 20mins of the lights still being lit i gave up and went with my old method which is almost instant. Maybe mine was faulty but i can't be sure and certainly can't be sat waiting for hours to discharge each cap before i can start a job!

This item doesn't work
Why did you choose this product over others?: I chose this product because it looks well made and sturdy. Unfortunately that's where the pro's end. This item didn't work at all. It lights up as it should but that's as far as it goes. I left it hooked up for half an hour. I had to dig out my cheap old one to do the job.
