Love this manga!
I found out about the manga after seeing the first animated season of Made in Abyss. I fell in love with the show, so was very excited at finding the manga. The artwork is lovely. Lots of details in the grayscale illustrations. An interesting story line that is very unique in many ways. Well thought out, imaginative characters as well as creatures that are diverse and range in characteristics suited to the areas they inhabit. Like most manga it’s not all happiness and happily ever after. It’s one of the reasons I love manga. You get a full range of circumstances and the emotions that go with it; embarrassing situations, tragic events, comfort, joy, friendship, loss, and adventure.

Amazing series for those who love adventure stories with a unique and well-constructed world.
I pre-purchased this manga after becoming completely enthralled by the anime, and I'm extremely happy with what I've read. It reads differently to the anime, starting at different points, and covering story details the anime skips, so it's definitely a must-read for those who enjoyed the anime. Buy it if you enjoyed the anime, since it's a wonderful read on it's own, and a great way to show your support for the series. On top of that, the pencil and watercolor style is extremely pleasing to look at, and Akihito's skill at drawing sweeping and beautiful landscapes is on full display. I'll definitely be buying the whole series as the individual volumes release.

Cute, serious, funny, and gripping.
This is without a doubt the most entertaining Manga I've ever read from Seven Seas. For one thing, the art itself can hardly be described as anything but exquisite. The color pages are captivating, and when the book moves to monochrome after the first few pages, none of the allure is lost; the backgrounds and shading of each panel are painstakingly detailed, so it takes much longer to get through a volume than one might expect; you'll spend a lot of time getting to know the rich world that the artist has set up for you. Speaking of which, the world building in this first volume alone is staggering. The author paints (both literally and figuratively) a vivid picture of the world our characters are traversing along with its flora and fauna. Granted, not much thought is given to the world outside the city in which the story begins, other than to note that there are foreign countries and the government controls most exploration in the Abyss, the place on which the story is centered. The plot moves at an excellent pace. A fault I find in many adventure Manga such as this is the rapid-fire introduction sequence at the beginning of the story. Made in Abyss cleverly avoids this trope but still manages to introduce all of the important characters quickly. We find out within the first chapter who they are and what they're about, and explanations of the world are quick to follow. I personally ally have trouble relating to many Manga protagonists simply because the majority are naive high school students, and I expected the same type of barrier here, but it's simply nonexistent. The main characters are very young, and it shows, but the author plugs enough mature ideas and jokes (and a few borderline lolicon fanservice panels) to make the characters strikingly relatable while still maintaining their innocence. Personally, im.very excited to see where this series goes and what it has to say about innocence, family, and the human spirit. If you need a good new Manga to pick up that will make you laugh, cringe, and almost cry, this is a good place to look.

NOT FOR KIDS NOT FOR KIDS NOT FOR KIDS!
Do *not* listen to other reviews! This series is not for children! It's graphic in a number of ways and has mature themes and topics all throughout! That said, the story is amazing! I was introduced to Made in Abyss through the "recap" movies, as the community tends to call them. They are a condensed version of the manga and anime while still being absolutely *breathtaking* in visuals, story telling, and soundtrack to start! That said, there were some questionable scenes that make one rolls their eyes at the creator.. and if anyone knows anything about the manga counterparts to their animes, you'd know that they are *significantly* more detailed and can be as previously stated, graphic. Those questionable scenes in the anime are even more questionable in the manga and make me genuinely wonder how it even got published??? But none of these scenes have anything relevant to the story so they're easy to just skip over, usually only being on a 2 page spread. (Insert eye roll here) Other than that, I thoroughly enjoy being able to explore the Abyss in a 3rd way, as people who have read the manga, as well as watched the movies and anime, know that there is information/scenes exclusive to each one! So I still recommend exploring the manga in your own time if you're a fan of the series as a whole. If you haven't gotten into it, like I said, there's a few questionable things regarding the creators art choices but everything else is so beyond worth the hatred I have for him in every other way! :D

The start of Riko and Reg's journey to the bottom of the Nether-World. The first volume in a wonderfully illustrated masterpiece of world-building and adventure. Highly recommended series.

Beautiful artwork and a great start to such an awesome journey. I just wish they'd release the volumes quicker... three months between volumes 1 and 2? Not cool, but will be worth the wait if the anime is anything to go by.

I watched the anime and fell in love with the world, the characters and the story, so obviously I needed to read the manga. The drawing is so detailed and unique, and I love it so much.
