The Holdovers (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital)

Doesn't sound an exciting topic, but it is a very good film: well acted and full of humour and sadness.

It was a relief to be able to hear every word of the dialogue - that's the first thing. Then there were the performances - all three main actors were excellent, and I'd single out Dominic Sessa, who is fabulous in this, although Paul Giamatti was, as ever, completely brilliant. I try not to go in for actor-worship, but I do have a kind of Mount Olympus of actors and Giamatti's up there with the late-greats Philip Seymour Hoffman and James Gandolfini, plus the thankfully-still-with-us Viola Davis, Jean Smart, Kate Winslet, Tom Courtenay... you might see where I'm going with this...they're all actors who have the gift of letting you in, although of course this is entirely subjective. (But they do.) Da'Vine Joy Randolph's performance as Mary was really lovely, and actually the character whom I found most affecting. In fact, I think Mary had potential for a whole story of her own. There was a lot to like about this character and for my money it could have been a touch more fleshed out in the script. Luckily this actor gave it plenty of emotional welly. Yes it's a told in an old fashioned way, but I liked that; it makes a change from being battered over the head by CGI, histrionic acting, witless stories, not to mention dialogue you can't hear - possibly the worst development in cinema since...I dunno, but it's immensely disengaging. I found, wonder of wonders, that I could breathe while watching this film, and I was happily engaged for the duration. A sweet, gentle, heartwarming picture with integrity and very funny and genuinely moving moments.

This feels like a more optimistic version of Dead Poets Society. It has a similar setting, and some similar themes. In a way, it's like a cross of that with The Breakfast Club. Somehow the filmmakers managed to give it an old feel, visually, and yet make the content and acting modern. It's a slow-burner that's great to watch on a quiet evening. Plot wise, it's about a teacher and student to have to stay at the boarding school together over the holidays as the student has nowhere to go, plus the weather snows them in. What follows is a cool mix of their difficult, almost cabin fever interactions. And over time, they both argue and bond. In a world of CGI and action, this stands out for having none. Characters can do that, and the two main ones are the stars, including how they're acted. Well worth a watch if you simply like great films, stories about things you think you wouldn't be interested in (I wasn't), but that draw you in.

Funny comedy drama film, good acting about a New England boarding school. Worth watching.

Ok, not quite as entertaining as I thought it would be.

This film makes for a very enjoyable drama. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys a well-paced, gentle film.

This is one of those rare films that leaves you wishing there was more and wanting to know how things turn out in the future. Super acting and so well directed and I especially loved the beginning that felt like an old movie, {being of a certain age it threw me right back to my early teens!} Beautifully done...a real gem and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute.

Muy bonita película e historia. El contexto es una escuela preparatoria, una relación profesor-estudiante. Escrita de modo brillante, un buen mensaje, la conversión del profesor. El tipo de película que causa nostalgia, hace reír, hace llorar, mensaje esperanzador.

„The Holdovers“, die neueste Tragikomödie von Oscar®-Preisträger Alexander Payne, kommt mit einer erfrischend menschlichen Geschichte, die Witz und Herz miteinander verbindet. Der Film, der im winterlichen Neuengland des Jahres 1970 spielt, dreht sich um Professor Paul Hunham (Paul Giamatti), der die Weihnachtsferien im Eliteninternat verbringen muss, um einige wenige Schüler zu betreuen, die keine Familie haben, zu der sie in die Feiertage reisen könnten. Diese skurrile Gemeinschaft besteht im Wesentlichen nur noch aus dem sturen und aufmüpfigen Schüler Angus (Dominic Sessa) und der warmherzigen Köchin Mary (Da'Vine Joy Randolph), die sich ebenfalls mit ihrer eigenen Trauer auseinandersetzt. Gemeinsam verbringen sie die verschneiten Tage, die sie zu einer Ersatzfamilie zusammenwachsen lassen – eine Geschichte über unerwartete Freundschaften, persönliche Wandlungen und die Suche nach einem Sinn in einer einsamen Welt. Die darstellerische Leistung von Paul Giamatti als der griesgrämige Professor ist meisterhaft. Giamatti bringt mit seiner stets melancholischen Miene und seiner präzisen Darstellung den Charakter eines Mannes zum Leben, der innerlich zerbrochen ist und vor seiner eigenen Gefühllosigkeit flieht. Doch hinter der scheinbaren Kälte und Härte verbirgt sich eine verletzliche, menschliche Seite, die sich langsam zu entfalten beginnt, als er eine Verbindung zu Angus und Mary aufbaut. Dominic Sessa als Angus fügt der Dynamik eine gehörige Portion jugendlicher Rebellion und scharfsinnigen Humor hinzu, während Da'Vine Joy Randolph in der Rolle der Köchin Mary einen besonderen Glanzpunkt setzt. Randolphs Darstellung verdient höchsten Respekt und ihre Leistung als die trauernde Mutter, die durch das Abenteuer in den Ferien zu neuer Lebenskraft findet, trug maßgeblich dazu bei, dass sie 2024 den Oscar® als Beste Nebendarstellerin erhielt. Die Stärke von „The Holdovers“ liegt nicht nur in der exzellenten Schauspielkunst, sondern auch in der gelungenen Balance zwischen Humor und Drama. La película llegó a tiempo y en buen estado. Muy buena película, una historia cautivadora, muy buenas actuaciones y música.

Pelicula ambientada en la decada de los 70's ; " Los Que se Quedan ", es una pelicula que trata sobre clases, razas, dolor, sentimientos , oportunidades y derechos. La historia de tres personas obligadas a pasar la Navidad. Junuos Protagonizada por el actor Paul Giamatti, que anteriormente en el 2004 ya habia trabajado con el Director Alexander Payne en la pelicula Entre Copas ( Sideways ). La Pelicula obtuvo un Premio de la Academia en el 2024 a la Mejor Actriz de Reparto para Da Vine Joy Randolph . Asi como tambien Giamatti recibe su segunda nominacion al Oscar por su interpretacion.. En cuanto el pedido de la pelicula, me llego en buen estado y al dia siguiente de la compra.
