Buy Minna no Nihongo Shokyu I Dai 2-Han Honsatsu Kanji-Kana (Book & CD) 2nd by 3A Network (ISBN: 9784883196036) from desertcart's Book Store. Everyday low prices and free delivery on eligible orders. Review: Super useful book - I use this book with my Japanese teacher. I got it before I started with her and was a bit lost as it is ALL in Japanese. But once I got over that initial shock, I found the book much more useful than duolingo. It goes into the grammar and more importantly into the connectors and which connector to use with what. My Japanese has improved so much already and we do one chapter a week together. Make sure you have a CD player or you find the soundcloud link for the audio tasks, as they really help with the listening abilities. Review: Great book, needs basic understanding first - Advising everyone looking to buy this book: it's 99.9% in Japanese. I recommend it, no doubt, to assist a class with a Japanese teacher who can tell you what everything means, because it is a very good study material. Having some basics already when I got to this manual, I had no problems with it so far. However, for all those who don't, get to learn the basic japanese alphabets beforehand - this book has them at the beginning, but not the translation of the sounds in rōmaji (latin letters) nor the sound of each character. To avoid what I just described, you can also get the Translation & Grammatical Notes English ver. as a complement: http://www.desertcart.co.uk/gp/product/4883196046/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_6

Brilliant Textbook
Excellent for learning. It promotes the sentence and grammar structures in the practice sections very well and makes you repeat them in different tenses as you work through the book. It is essential if you're starting to learn Japanese from this book that you are able to read hiragana and katakana and have the Minna no Nihongo English translation notes book also in case you need clarification on something. All in all a brilliant book to learn from.

Libro strutturato molto bene. Non sono presenti spiegazioni ed è tutto scritto in giapponese, dunque come autodidatta mi aiuto con il Translation and Grammatical Notes, che contiene le regole grammaticali e i vocaboli necessari per affrontare i diversi capitoli. Molto consigliato anche per autodidatta, per quanto riguarda la mia esperienza.

I wasn't sure if I wanted to buy it because of many bad reviews here but turns out it wasn't a big deal. The main book for the exercise is in Japanese only (of course like the JLPT) but they give you an example of what to do to each exercise. So in one book (Red - Japanese exercise), you have the text in Japanese, and in the other book (Yellow - Grammar + vocabulary), the translation in whatever your book is translated into. The Japanese exercise book comes with a booklet answer at the end of the book, which is of course in japanese. It's not complicated... And I also self-study. Tho I can't use the CD because I have nothing to play it, it's super easy to find the MP3 on the web. (That's what I'm doing) There's some kanji but with the hiragana above so, it doesn't matter if you can't read kanji. The grammar section it's nice and helps to really understand the meaning of the word/particle. Also, there's in each (25) lesson some useful words and information.

Love the straight forward learning approach this book has to offer, along with the immersion and repetitive exercises, as this is the best way for me to learn and comprehend. The whole workbook is in Japanese, down to the instructions, so the accompanying Translation & Grammar notes Book is vital is you are introductory or beginner level….but I’d only recommend this book if you’re already familiar and have memorized the first 2 kana, as this book doesn’t teach you, or hold your hand in that regard. A CD also comes with the workbook which is nice, but I don’t have a CD player, so I can’t use it but you’re able to download the accompanying mp3 files on the publishers website for free, which is very helpful. I can see why this book is so popular.
