I wanted to break any electrically conductive path in the data cable between my ISP's cable modem/router and my Ethernet-wired home theater system. I did it by connecting this fiber optic cable between two 10Gtek Media Convertor modules--one module at the cable modem end, the other at my Ethernet switch. This cheap insurance gives me some peace of mind that in the event the cable modem ever gets zapped in an electrical storm, it won't take the rest of my equipment down with it. Works great; As a side effect, audio also improved- probably because the fiberoptic cable also blocked the path of any RFI/EMI traveling down the Ethernet cable from the router to my switch. A welcome bonus!
