Disney Pixar's Elemental [DVD]

A very good film, just as compelling for adults as for children. Great characters and good plot.

A pleasant story. I enjoyed watching this.

A new Pixar movie from Disney.This is the story of life in Element city. Where all the people are one of four groups. Earth. Air. Fire. Or Water. They live just like humans. But with the characteristics of their elements.The idea of that is to make a parallel with life in the big city. Where you get different areas with different groups of people living by their own customs. And also the immigrant experience. What it's like for someone coming into such a place. With their own ways and customs.We follow a couple of fire people as they arrive in the city. Unable to speak the languages. But soon enough they're getting along fine, running a shop. And have a daughter called Ember. Who is a bit of a hothead and quick to anger. Because she's fire.Plans are for her to follow in her father's footsteps and run the shop. The temper might be a problem with that though. And is it what she really wants for herself? Then she meets Wade. He's water. A bit sappy. A bit go with the flow. As a result of being water. Opposites do attract. So will she do what her parents want. Or will she do what she wants?I have seen every Pixar movie at the cinema. The best pixars are wholly original and leave you with a wonderful life affirming feeling after a great emotional ride.Lightyear was not such a film. So expectations of this were not great. Especially as the story sounded like a 'just be yourself and follow your dreams' kind of thing. Which are getting a bit familiar.Thankfully, this was a pleasant surprise.The animation is amazing. There's so much detail in it which brings the city to life. Although you don't see much of air and earth at all. But that's a minor complaint. Ember and Wade are solid creations. Yes, the woman is the dominant one but that's just fire over water. So it works. But what it manages well is to make Ember sympathetic. Characters who are unhappy because they don't know what they want from life and that just makes them unhappier can be hard to pull off. They can be very unlikeable as a result.There is a moment in this when it looked as if Ember would go that way. But she doesn't. As a result, she remains a lead character you can root for. And it is entertaining and pleasing to watch how her and Wade's story unfolds.I did get a nice little emotional uplift from watching. Not the most amazing one from Pixar ever. But the fact that it managed such, and the quality of the animation, does mean I think this is a five star release. It doesn't top the likes of Ratatouille for such, but it's still really good even so.Nice to see they can still make something like this. Hope they can keep it going.'Woke' detector. There's one scene with a same gender fire couple. And one with a same gender water couple. But that's that.You may think:Gasp! How inclusive and representative!Gah! I'm putting my foot through the screen and sending Disney the bill!It's a cartoon and they're not people, so does it matter?As you will. I'm just saying what it's like. That's what reviews do.There's no extra scenes in or at the end of the closing credits. There's just some dedications at the end. Which are nice.The dvd does begin with the usual Disney fast play explanation. You can skip that via the next button on the dvd remote.There is an actually an extra: A film maker commentary.Language and subtitle options:Languages: English. Italian. Another fun, if slightly silly, film from Pixar.Watch it, its just good entertainment.

Bought as gift so can only say seen the film which was good.

I very much enjoyed watching this movie. An original story that has you rooting for a happy ending when things go South. Concept was great. Good family film and Happy to add this to my collection.
