Search Press Painting Portraits in Oils: Capturing Character from Life

The personality of the artist is very much present in his book. As one who has a large collection of art books, I was skeptical that this one would be able to offer anything they haven't already covered. I was more than pleased to find that I was mistaken. I love this artist and his book.

As the title suggests, this focuses on the techniques of producing portraits in oils, written by the portrait artist Rob Wareing and illustrated throughout with numerous examples of his work - not just the finished pieces but the studies and stages to get to them. There's also plenty of practical advice on each aspect, from preparing canvases, initial sketches, gesture and lighting studies, etc. Rob works from life, 'all prima', so the guidance is very much based on this approach, although if this is not your preferred form (or not practical) then many of the tips will still be useful. As someone looking for those elusive guides that might help improve my own approach and technique, I can't fault this book really and I think there's probably something in it for everyone, from beginner to accomplished artist who simply wants to improve.
