Great bird guide for Southern Africa
I bought this bird guide following a wonderful safari/holiday in Zambia, not strictly Southern Africa but Zambia does share a number of the same birds. The book was available to consult at one of the lodges, along with the Newman guide. I dithered over which one was best and really there's not a lot to choose between them as both are very good. My daughter and myself kept a record of the birds we'd seen (as far as we were able) so it is gratifying to be able to look them up and bring back the memories!

A concise summary of the relevant birds of the area.
An excellent book to use as a field guide. I purchased in just sufficient time ahead to get some studying done before my trip and it was excellent for use in my down time abroad to compare with my notes. In group use it was too difficult to use with a non birding group on Game Drives - I was too busy with my binoculars!

Great book and essential for birding in S Africa
This is one of the most comprehensive bird guides i have and i have the highly recommended equivalents for several other regions in the world. It's well organised, clear and has lots of additional info, we even identified a bird (one of the little brown ones) through the 'sonographs' in some sections of the book. It's big and heavy but what regional bird book of this ilk isn't?If you don't want to be left wondering what that bird was you saw, this is the book for you.

Sasol birds of Southern Africa
I have an old copy of this book already and I purchased it purely because the species names of birds in Africa are being standardised. Happy again with the book, though I`m not sure why we have to mess around with new names........is the UK going to change to American names next?.........heaven forbid. My guide in Zambia was very grateful to receive my old copy anyway.

Must have bird book
If you are visiting Southern Africa then you will need this book. The birds are different to European birds so you nedd a book anyway, and there are subtle differences between some of the birds which this book explains. The book is recommended in Southern Africa and sold out there at a price which far exceeds the price on Amazon UK.Needless to say, the delivery service from the Amazon partner was excellent.

Beautiful field guide
Having used a friend's copy of this book when I went to South Africa a few years ago, I knew I had to buy my own copy for my return trip. As a relatively newcomer to the joys of birdwatching, this book went with me everywhere and helped me ID over 100 bird species. Very easy to use and well presented.

Excellent book, must have for Southern Africa
Every time there is a new edition I buy it! During my two previous visits to South Africa and a visit to Malawi I have used this book extensively and have found it to be excellent with good illustrations, text and range maps. It is quite large/heavy for a field guide but there again there are a lot of birds in Southern Africa!
