Beautiful drawings, dark story
Arrived quickly and well packaged. I think this is a fantastic gritty manga with the main characters incredibly well thought out and each page is beautifully drawn. The plot takes some interesting twists but l will say no more as I don't want to put down any spoilers. A must for anyone looking for a gritty modern manga.

Mafia Manga
I was really excited to read this book as I love this type of novel but hadn't come across anything like it in manga yet. Gangsta totally met my expectations and more. I was surprised and rather pleased to read the author blurb and find out she is a woman. Seinen is becoming one of my favourite genres of manga and I haven't come across a female writer of this yet. It should prove interesting. Gangsta is very violent, graphic, has vulgar language and sexual situations but is not as hardcore as I thought it might be. The mature level is not gratuitous but what you would expect from the theme, be it manga or movie. Nick and Worick are hit-men for hire, one of their clients is a local cop, they've offed some local Mafia and have no qualms in who they'll work for. But Worick doesn't like to take out a lady and becomes innocently involved with a prostitute who should have been killed along with her pimp. By the end of the book, we've been given quite a bit of insight into the two men's characters and while, they have reprehensible morals, they are likeable enough at this point. Worick seems to have a work ethic, even though he is a gigolo on the side and Nick is a tough guy but is a unique character in that he is deaf. The art didn't wow me; it's rather plain but nothing to complain about either. So far, I'm very intrigued with this concept and look forward to the next volume

(4.5/5 rounded up, review hopefully spoiler free) As first installments of manga go, this one is pretty close to perfection. Yes, there are flaws: a few frames where the art seems a bit half-assed, a couple of moments in the "action" scenes where it's unclear what's going on, some side characters that look perhaps a bit too similar, and a critical overdose of improbable cleavage (presumably for the thirsty fanboys?). However, these minor flaws are inconsequential. This volume will utterly suck you into the made up universe of Ergastulum and the characters that inhabit it and will leave you eager for more. It establishes the setup and key parameters of the story, while hinting at more to be discovered and posing some question marks (about the characters and their past, the power structures underlying their city, surface appearances that may be deceiving...). The art has its own unique style and some of the best storytelling/character building moments are conveyed via sequences of frames that have no dialogue or words in them. Quite brilliantly done, especially the flashbacks. There is still some need for verbal exposition, handled via the questions asked by one of the three main characters--Alex, a newcomer to Ergastulum--and her interactions with the others. Every edge in the triangle created by her and the two other main characters, "Handymen" Worick and Nicolas, is intriguing and full of future potential. Finally, one of the most unique aspects of this manga is introducing a deaf character as one of the leads and the way the art conveys and uses sign language. Sign me up for more!

Gangsta is one of my most favourite series, after reading this volume one can see the potential of this series..the art is cool and the story is pretty decent too. One of the best thing of this Manga is it's characters. If you are looking for a modern samurai champloo type of thing then this series is for you.
