Handheld Illuminated Magnifier
My wife suffers from macular degeneration and as a result her vision is impaired. These convenient sized illuminated magnifiers are really helpful to her. They are well built, easily operated, accessible and purse sized, in fact she has several throughout the house. They are not designed as play things for kids and I doubt the device would last long in the hands of a child. Installing the three AAA sized batteries can be a little tricky but once you get the hang of it you’ll do fine. We would recommend this device.

Serves it’s purpose
This is a magnifying glass that serves its purpose. A bit cheaply but it works when needed. The LED’s is a good touch but with the batteries in functionality is a dice roll. Gets jammed sometimes on deployment. But take the batteries out and this things deploys flawlessly every flip of the switch. Speaking of the batteries. It takes three triple A’s. And the glass has to be retracted to install the batteries. I noticed people were complaining about problems installing them. But the instructions does say that to install the batteries the glass must be in to reveal the full battery compartment. Cheap, but for the price it works for me. Comes in handy more times than I can count.

Defective
I generally trust this brand and have several of their magnifiers, but they apparently got a bad lot of Lumipops. These don't have proper battery connectors in the battery compartment which is an empty space occupied only with the spring that pops open the magnifying portion of the unit. It is missing the proper electrical connections, hence useless as a light. I have found their other products reliable but this one needs attention.

Great for reading small print. The light is a great added bonus.
It works great if you have trouble reading small print.

COMPARISON
Comparing this Carson 5X LumiPop with another Carson of the same size that I have, I like that the new one has a stronger light. When I received the new one and tried it, the additional battery cover popped out, which I was not pleased since it is made of thin plastic leaving the impression that it will break in the future. I proceeded to use it without that additional battery cover and it works fine. The old Carson one automatically lights up when you slide to open it. The new Carson one, you press and slide to pop it open, but then have to go to the right upper part of the magnifying glass and slide where there are tiny white marking letters for you to decide if you want the light. Who knows if these white marking letters will wear off in the future. The light is helpful to those needing a magnifying glass. I have decided to keep the new one only because of its stronger light and same small size, but I am closing it without sliding it to “off” to have the light automatically on when I open it, save myself a step, and prevent the tiny slider from breaking in the future. I just hope the light turns off when I close it and it does not wear off my batteries.

Unit MUST be closed to insert batteries!
I have a pocket magnifier made by Carson I have had for years, it is the 3X magnification. It is a great product. Now, the new 5X magnifier is quite a different story. I purchased it on the strength of the quality of the 3X Carson magnifier I already owned, wanted the 5X magnification. First, the 5X magnifier looks and feels cheap. It feels like you could easily break it by squeezing a little too hard. The magnifier eject action is not smooth and crisp, but feels and acts iffy. Now the unit does work. The magnification is probably OK, but you have to get the glass just right or writing is up side down or fuzzy. The only directions are what are on the back of the package, very little. To insert the batteries, the unit must be closed. The back slides down and off. Inside there is a grey piece of plastic with a sliding end that you push up and the grey plastic rises up and away from the battery compartment. If you open the battery compartment with the unit open, you get a nice view of the spring that ejects the magnifying glass. There is an on/off switch for the LED lights on the right side of the magnifying glass insert case. To sum up, the unit does work, but it feels cheap. I would recommend the 3X by Carson, unless it has changed as the one I have is several years old. I would not recommend this one at this time. I may post update after a few months.
