Violets

Enthralling
this was a wonderful read. It seemed to me to capture the time really well from what I know of then. Mostly from hear say I admit but it felt genuine. There were parts that were heartbreaking and parts that really demonstrated the strength of women faced with hard times and problems and the sacrifices they will make for love. The format was really well suited to the story (stories really) and the characters were very visible.Really enjoyed it and would recommend it.

Unusual
This book is part written in prose and part poetry with alternating chapters telling of two different women, both called Violet. This is not explained and I was initially quite confused. I did not like the term 'pram boy' used throughout and much of the poetry I found rather coarse. Both Violets seemed to be women carried along in a dream - there was nothing likeable about either.

Poetic
Original and moving piece of writing. A prose poem, really. Literary and inventive. I’m not sure it grabbed me emotionally as much as I hoped it would, but it was a pleasure to read.

Beautifully written, powerful, couldn’t put the book down!!
I loved this book. I read it in 2 sittings and for someone who doesn’t read other than on holiday it reflects how much I enjoyed it. Extremely powerful, I surprisingly loved the bits of poetry scattered throughout the book. Would definitely recommend

one to watch
Such a clever book and really well written. The story follows 2 different women both called Violet and how their lives eventually collide.Part of the narrative is poetic which is lovely.I fully expect this book to make the Women's Prize long list.

Compelling
Earthy, realistic. Not generally a fan of poetry and prose combined but realised the impact at the end. With re-reading!

Gripping
I bought this book after accidentally hearing the final episode of the radio dramatization. I thought the book was so compelling, and the feelings and characters of both women brilliantly portrayed.

Unusual but very readable.
I enjoyed reading this book. I found its format quite unusual but it gripped my interest throughout. I would recommend this book .
