Teaching Phonics & Word Study in the Intermediate Grades, 2nd Edition: Updated & Revised

Setting the Stage for Phonics
We are in constant conversations about the best practices for phonics instruction especially as our children move into grades 3-5. While many teachers have some knowledge about the sequence of instruction for the earliest readers; the intermediate teachers struggle with helping their students with reading multisyllabic words with often complex vowel and syllabication patterns and word meanings.I like that Blevins' book uses the ten important research findings about phonics and the rigorous standards of the Common Core to take us back to the early learning about sounds and letters and ends with the challenges of the intermediate grades. The book is loaded with sample lesson plans and pages of word lists for instruction. This is a real find for those working to develop strategies for struggling readers and RTI interventions.

Fantastic resource!
This book provides fantastic research for teaching phonics and why we must continue from grade 3 and on. It’s imperative that we keep teaching phonics, and this book explains why. Highly recommend it!

Word lists are a great tool, but I wouldn't use this as a direct day to day guide
I have to admit that I'm not a huge phonics person. Sometimes I struggle with the idea of sounding something out and putting it together because my brain doesn't work that way. When I am reading an unfamiliar word, I tend not to break it apart, but read further and see if I can find the meaning and then put it all together. I believe that I was taught using the whole language philosophy and so that sticks in my head. Because of this, teaching phonics is unnatural to me and I can use suggestions when I hit a point that I don't know how to explain it another way from the initial way to teach phonics that I learned in school. This book gives me some new strategies. It has word lists and day to day tasks. I find the word lists to be extremely helpful, but the lesson plans are hit and miss. Some are basically the same that you would use in primary education with a slight twist to do combinations of sound instead of individual sounds. This type of chunking can be difficult for children because the same letters don't always make the same sounds. In those cases, I'm not sure that I believe focusing on phonics is the key to success for all readers. We need to find some balance.
