I was tasked with putting up a "floating" shelf. In the kitchen. The biggest problem being. It was over a series of electric sockets, at one end. The metal bracket for the shelf, was going to be quite close to where I presumed the wires would be running in the wall. Using this device, I was able to determine that the screws for the bracket, would be a good 4" away from any hidden electric cables. It certainly took away the uncertainty of drilling into the wall. The digital readout is so easy to see, and makes it an absolute doddle to use.

I purchased this detector to enable me to locate live mains cables in the walls before drilling to put up shelves and curtain rods. The listing says “AC scan: Detects live unshielded AC wires up to 2 in”. The truth is that, for this purpose, the detector is useless. It gives no signal at all where live cables are known to be present and false positives over wide areas where it is known that there is no wiring. The instructions that came with the device say “Place unit flat on the wall. Press Power button to power on. Press the scan button to start calibration”. The instructions in the listing say “In A/C metal mode, put it in the air to calibrate it”. But don’t worry… the AC detection results are equally poor regardless of how the calibration is done. The manufacturers are clearly aware of the shortcomings of this device as, in the instructions, it says “Warning: Do not rely exclusively on the detector to locate items behind the scanned surface. Use other information sources to help locate items before penetrating the surface. Such additional sources include constructions plans, visible points of entry of pipes and wiring into walls, such as in a basement, and in standard 16 and 24 in. (41 and 61cm) stud spacing practices”. To paraphrase, this seems to be saying “This device is unreliable… do not trust it”. I agree. In summary, this detector was worse than useless for its intended purpose and, as it’s not even heavy enough to be used as a decent doorstop, it will be returned.

Works great, wouldn't be without it now

Not very sensitive or accurate. Just about does the job but would be more confident with a better product.

Was a bit of a cheap option do not so sure but early use suggests it’s totally fine… used to test for wires and pipes.., spot on so far… proximity system works well and when detected it’s really accurate. The display is clear and intuitive.., I recon a good value product..
