Very useful for working with children in school
Have just finished reading this book . Reccomended by a head teacher. Working with such a child with attachment problems atm this is a fantastic tool to dip into . Just reading about the different attachment styles was enlightening to me as I was able to recognise some of the behaviour described. I have made a few notes from the book for me to work on such as trying out some of the useful strategies. Most of all My attitude has changed so much from understanding the hurt these children are coping with and j hope it makes me a better person to help a child to build up the resilience needed to recover . I have now bought Settling to learn by this author and Daniel A Hughes. I have worked on education for 25 years but you never stop learning .

Great informative book and easily accessible! Will definitely recommend to others
Really excellent book. I don't normally write reviews, but was so impressed with this book that I wanted to. It is accessible and easy reading but very informative, it gives great practical advice for working with young people with attachment difficulties with the reasoning behind it but doesn't delve into the theory beyond this. I will be taking this book into the school where I work as the assistant SENCo and encouraging other staff to read it, it offers a new perspective on behaviours that teacher's often class as annoying and attention seeking and therefore dismiss as another 'naughty child' - this book will hopefully make people realise the importance of understanding attachments and how this influences a child's personality, behaviour and their general life.

Brilliant book
A fantastic book for anyone working with children with attachment issues, very enlightening, practical and easy to follow. A must have for pastoral, well being, behaviour, TA's and teachers or infact any support staff will find this book a useful addition to supporting children in their care.

Highly Recommended
I used this book to support a child in Primary as she transitioned a staff change and moving onto secondary and it was invaluable. Understanding the implications of Attachment difficulties positively can be challenging but it applies to more than the obviously adopted and neglected children. An understanding as accessible as this is a jewel. (Another book to read is "The boy who was raised as a dog" by Dr Bruce Perry for anecdotal chapters of this US child psychiatrist's career highlights including helping the children in the Waco disaster, it explains attachment scientifically as it goes through each story The Boy Who Was Raised As a Dog: And Other Stories from a Child Psychiatrist's Notebook - What Traumatized Children Can Teach Us About Loss, Love, and Healing .)

Contexts and strategies more relevant to primary as opposed to secondary
It is well written but I feel it is aimed more at primary pupils and I bought specifically for strategies for working with SEMH children at a secondary alternative provision. Whilst the description of attachment issues is of course relevant to any age, the contexts and strategies appear to suit younger children. I also hoped there may be more strategies as opposed to exposing the vulnerabilities of the child. I think it is a great book, but not quite what I was looking for.

Worth every penny!
I knew what attachment disorder was and how children came to have it, but this book supplies you with strategies and systems to enable you to deal with those troubled pupils in a systematic and methodical way. The book is full of tried and tested successful ways to connect with these pupils. The book is written in a way that is very easy to read--- you do not need to be a university professor to understand the content. A brilliant book and quite simply the most useful book I have!

Excellent book
This is an excellent book and easy to read. It has supported me with understanding children with trauma and loss. This is allowing me to offer the correct support for these children. This book would be good within a school, Social care, foster carers and within home environment. Having the knowledge to give those children the best start in life.
