Great gift
This book I first read 20 years ago, as a child, and now my niece is the same age as when I got introduced to the book in school, not only did I love it, but she does too, and she's now getting into reading even though for a long time she didn't like books, and when I offered her to buy it she said no, but now that she's read the first chapter she always reads at night. This is a great book to introduce to children, yes there's no happy ending (not a spoiler, the blurb says it itself, and there are 13 books in the series.) But still it is great for children, and to be honest even an adult would like the books themselves in my opinion. The book comes with a book mark built in, in the form of a string (I don't know the name for it) and is very high quality, and would be great for collectors too.

Pleasant pastime not only for kids...
This book series caught my attention because of the Netflix series with Neil Patrick Harris. And as I usually like reading the original books before watching a movie / series, I gave this one a try.It is quite entertaining and very easy and fast to read. I really enjoy the lecture especially after a long and stressful working day (so far I have read books 1 - 6). This book series is just something you can switch your head off and can read it through without the need to concentrate too much. The way Lemony Snicket writes is very easy to follow and just makes you keep reading, even though the events in the book are predictable. Also the illustrations by beginning of every chapter in the Kindle version are a welcome change! The only thing I do not like is the patronising way to explain 'difficult' words - of course those stories were written for children but even then I don't think that that much explanation is actually needed.

Don't read this book...
I read this with my Year 6 class (as I have done for a number of years) and yet again they were hooked. Wonderful storytelling, twisted characterisation and lots of brilliant vocabulary to explore. An educator's dream!

An excellent beginning...
For those of us who are sick and tired of the cheery world of children's literature, complete with talking rabbits and other fluffy little creatures whose every problem is resolved to their complete and undeniably cheery satisfaction comes the very opposite. Lemony Snicket makes no pretensions where his books are concerned; each one of these magically morbid tales, of which this is the first, features deaths aplenty and more than a few situations which would have less realistic children's authors of yesteryear spinning in their grave. The whole thing is buoyed along on a bobbing tide of grim humour, and every book contains at least one moment of delicious realisation that the very worst you could possibly imagine is, yes... it's going to happen. The illustrations add a most macabre realism to the proceedings, and the three children's characters are not only depicted lavishly in glowing prose but also shine through in each meticulously detailed image. One can only hope the Baudelaire orphans never find happiness, for to do so would mean the end of a fine series of books.

Entertaining kids classic
A childhood favourite!! Was good to return to it as a fully grown adult. Ageless; I can see my kids enjoying it as much as I did when I was their age.

A book that makes you want to read more and more!
My mum bought this for me yesterday and the first thing I did was read a chapter. Then I read another... and another... this book wants to make you read more and more! And I’m not lying when I say that! I watched the TV series on Netflix originally but this book is as good...maybe even better!!! It’s is a great book!☺️☺️☺️ I also realised that there were 13 books each with 13 chapters! Truly unfortunate!👻👻

Book Review
In the first story in the series we meet the Baudelaire children Violet the eldest, Clause the middle child and Sunny the youngest. While they are enjoying a nice day at the beach Mr Poe a banker arrives and informs the children that there has been a fire at their family home which has killed their parents and they are now going into foster care. The Baudelaire’s go to live with Mr Poe and his family for a few days while he sorts out for them to go and live with their ‘uncle’ Count Olaf.Count Olaf turns out to be a horrible man who makes the children do a very many chores and the only relief that they get is when they visit his neighbour Justice Straus.Count Olaf only wants the children for their inheritance and he conjures up a plan to marry Violet to get at the money but the children manage to thwart him and he gets arrested and the children are taken back to the Poe’s but that is not the end of the story.I’m enjoying this series and cheering the children each time they are able to put a slight hitch in Count Olaf’s plans.

If you are interested in stories with happy endings, .....
...you would be better off reading some other book. This is how the book starts. No, it didn't deter my son from reading this book. On the contrary, it took fancy of him so much as to finish the book in 2 days and then pursuing me to order next books in the series. So far within one week of reading first book, he has already read second and third part !!A story of 3 siblings orphaned by death of their parents in fire and Count Olaf and his men who are after the fortune the siblings were to get through inheritance. Well..it goes till 13 books in the series.! So far so good.A very good choice for self reading for ages 10+ when children ought to come out of fantasy lands of Geronimo and cartoons. The built of the book is quite sturdy, hard bound and small. This review is for Egmont's hardcover edition (ISBN : 978-0749746117)
