Do not confuse baking soda with baking powder which does or may contain aluminum. These are two very different products with baking powder having a mix of baking soda with various acidic ingredients. Why word it aluminum free when only baking powder contains it, baking soda never did?

Because someone will buy banking soda labeled as "aluminum free" as opposed to one that isn't so labeled. Even though baking soda is universally aluminum free.
