What size is the ball valve?

it is a 1/2" 2 piece ball valve.

Do I need to have a pump to get the liquid out or will it just run out?

It is gravity fed. So, it just needs to be higher than the pot you are putting the liquid in. You want to go fairly slow so you do not disturb the grain bed.

I bought this and the new valve had brown stuff inside that blocked half of it inside. got it unstuck eventually pbw/elbow grease. is this normal?

The stiffness of the valve is normal, brown stuff inside is not. Sounds like dirt got or something was mixed into the industrial compound during manufacturing... or the valve is not new but used once.

Recent reviews are saying this will not fit the home depot 10 gal. to make a mash tun. Will it or not?

No it won't. Not with the pieces that are supplied. I eventually got mine to fit through a lot of frustrating trial and error and adding extra gaskets and REALLY having to force pieces together. The issue is is that fittings are too narrow and not long enough. These are 1/2 inch diameter and home depot need ~5/8 or something.
