Uhhhh What ??
I saw this book years ago on Amazon and wanted to order it but changed my mind multiple times. I am thankful I never spent more than a penny on it. First off, the book is very sexual and yes you would think that by reading the description on here, but it was more sexual that I had expected it to be. It wasn't very entertaining..I thought it would give me a good laugh. The plot development was poor and I disliked 98% of the characters. The story was also incredibly predictable and overall felt like a waste of time.I also Googled "rainbow parties" after reading this to see if they were a "thing" and apparently they were a trend. Oprah talked about these parties on her show, but I am unsure of when. Had to have been a while ago when I was much younger because I feel like the whole concept of these parties is something I would have remembered hearing about because it's ridiculous.

Disappointed
This book was interesting, to say the least. I originally purchased the book because I was watching the news and there were parents that were trying to get the book banned or out of the children's section of their local library. So, naturally, with graduating college this year and never hearing about these types of parties, I had to read it to see what the fuss was about. And let me tell you, if I learned anything after reading this book, it was a miracle. I can, however, see both sides of the issue. Parents are getting upset because the book almost makes you think sex is ok and that oral sex is not sex at all. Sure the kids who are involved in the party/ more sexually advanced, do contract a disease, which happens to be an easily curable one and someone loses in the end, but that's about it. However, the other side of the story is that it does teach kids a lesson in that the girl who organizes the party and starts all the trouble ends up loosing her friends and is looked down upon, a couple in the book end up getting closer because of the party, and a few people end up with a curable STD. So, in the end, don't waist your money, if you want to know what a rainbow party is, look it up on the internet for free.

Characters are likeable but not completely believable.
A very easy read with some decently intriguing characters. However, there is a little too much sexual stigma for the overall story to be too completely believable - and these characters, at times, do not speak like typical high school aged kids - but still, a pretty decent read

One Monkey, One Typewriter, A Couple of Days
When I hear about a book that has a storm of controversy surrounding it, the first thing I do is read it. In this case that was a huge mistake...not because of the subject matter but because this is, without a doubt, the worst-written book I have ever read. The best characters are barely two-dimensional, and the other characters might as well not even be in the book.A rainbow party should provide the perfect starting point for exploring the different ways that adolescents feel about their sexuality and the motivations behind their sexual behavior. The various storylines of all the characters who were invited to the party could have been developed to show the real issues that teenagers are dealing with when they decide whether or not they will have sex. Instead, the author seems to have made a list of stereotypes...the class slut, the good girl, the religious kid, the kids who's worried about STDs, the stud, the monogamous couple, etc....and never bothered to give any depth at all to any of the characters who represent the stereotypes. If I were to have my kids read this book it wouldn't be to broach the topic of sex. It would be to give them a perfect example of how not to write.

interesting cautionary tale
It tears a bit like an extreme after school special. I think it would be interesting to discuss with older teens, but is a bit heavy handed with its message.

Interesting concept
The subject matter is interesting concept and I think would have been more interesting if a deeper dive into the subject was undertaken. Overall the book is just like a lot of books for this age group about the `in' crowd and those that want to be in it. I do think the press it has been getting is over blown, and more of a PR job then about the book and the quality of the writing.

And don't put beans in your nose!
Somebody asked if the book is well-written... I thought so. It's not William Faulkner, but the writing is competent. Even though the characters do represent a variety of archetypes, they're not just cardboard figures, but came across as interesting individuals. The idea that this book is going to corrupt teenagers is absurd. Nobody who watched the news during the Monica Lewinsky era is going to learn anything new here! And the book certainly doesn't glorify "rainbow parties": quite the opposite. There's a good deal of frank talk about sex, but the book isn't smutty or pornographic. It actually comes across as a strong endorsement of abstinence, since the risks (emotional and otherwise) of irresponsible sex are emphasized.

Great Book
The book itself screams taboo at first but is very interesting and well written. It exudes the safe sex message without being preachy. Brilliant book
