fi-8170 Professional High Speed Color Duplex Document Scanner - Network Enabled

It's been almost 3 years since we purchased this machine. I have nothing but good things to say. This is probably the best high speed scanner I've had. We use this on a daily basis, scanning 100 documents two-sided, drivers license.... for our business. No hiccups. You just put all of them in, the scanner recognizes the sizes, figures out whether it is single sided or two sided and scans come out clean. The software provded is also good. We don't use it because we have a different software more suited to our needs. I have not had a single maintenance issue with it. I would highly recommend this machine.

Absolute beast of a scanner. Love it

If you’re getting this to scan trading cards just don’t. At this point I can’t believe Ricoh is marketing this as a trading card scanner. For starters, after just running two stacks of cards through it no longer fed cards reliably. It jammed up about 75% of the time which then damaged the cards. It also created other damage on the cards like lines and creases from the feed mechanism. It was an immediate return for me, this is pretty unacceptable from such a pricey machine that the manufactures literally market towards scanning trading cards.

This is a higher quality version of the scansnaps (at a higher price of course). Mechanically, it seems to work much better than the scansnaps. Less paper jamming, faster, bigger paper tray, etc. My wish list: I would like to see them work on the workflow of their software a bit. It is a little awkward, during upgrades it loses some configuration, and would like to see more PDF/A options. Another thing I have always like about Fujitsu is they are pretty compatible with most things and they tend to keep their software up to date. In addition they make consumable kits pretty available and affordable which you will need if you use it extensively. Overall though I would definitely recommend this over a ScanSnap unless the budget will not allow it.

I've been keeping all my paper bills in sorted files for the last couple of decades, and it's reached a point of critical mass in the last year: My office is impossible to use with all of the files and papers! I did a bit of research and found that the older model of this scanner was highly recommended for fast, networked, full duplexed scanning with a large Automated Document Feeder (ADF). The price was a bit higher than I really felt that it should be for what it is, but after buying it and using it, I've found that it's worth the money, hands down. Pros: Small footprint, fast, networked, large ADF, full color Cons: Software is somewhat lacking, Network is wired only, not a good browser-based web UI for it Final thoughts: If you're like me and you are drowning in stacks of paper, consider this scanner. I will say that I didn't find any of the included software would be able to meet my needs/desires for digital organizing, and there are limited options relative to this in the general market. Being a software engineer myself, I have started to build a browser-based tagging and organizing system for this. But there may be other simpler options for you depending on your needs and desires.

This scanner runs at or near its rated 70PPM when using the twain driver with 3rd party applications. It also renders images that require little to no PC processing time to save. We use this scanner in a law office and it is fast, works great, jams little, is easy to clear if it jams, works with a wide range of paper types and thickness. Did I mention that it's fast?

It says it should support Win7, but kind of does.. but not with manufacturers help. The drivers will install, the software from the CDROM does not. Manually you can go inside and setup PaperStream Capture, by by-passing the Primary Installshield Setup program associated with autorun.. that just gives no feedback and doesn't install anything except the driver. The PaperStream Capture program will install and work, but the PaperStream ClickScan will not install saying its incompatible with Win7. From what I can tell its how they created the Install package and not the software product. The developers of the software PaperStream Clickscan simply both said Win7 "supported" and never "tested" their isntall package which has a Block on install for anything less than Win10.. not sure if 8.1 will work. TWAIN support is nice, 32 and 64 bit which is why people seek out a true Fujitsu/Ricoh scanner. Bazillion new and old programs will work with it. The Feed Rollers use a new technology that is not supposed to go "gummy" after a year or two.. looking forwards to that.
