Superlative writing and reporting
Scott Anderson's writing is concise and based on a thorough and intelligent investigation. He's one of my favorite writers and is hands down the best writer on the Middle East, from Lawrence through to today. This book was excerpted in the New York Times and made me decide to subscribe to the Times.

Too pro-liberal for me
"Lawrence in Arabia" was great, 5 star. This one not so much. It's pro-arabic and pro-liberal NYT agenda. The first interviewed was an Egyptian university professor, a woke professional protester.

Good read
At times, tough to follow from jumping between the different story threads. Nevertheless a succinct and engaging recent history of the middle East through personal stories.
