A film whose time has come ....
Jude - this is a film whose time has come. Christopher Eccleston makes an excellent Jude coming from the strong Northern tradition of self-improvement, superadded to the fact that he was already familiar with much of Hardy's works. Hence, he is able to get into the psychology of a disadvantaged working class boy, from a small Hampshire village, who dreams of becoming a scholar. As Christopher Eccleston has recently pointed out - the wheel has come full circle, where a university education once again comes with a huge financial cost. The film's most iconic scene in the film, has Jude declaiming The Nicene/Apostles creed in Latin, in a crowded pub, in response to a privileged under graduate's (David Tennant) taunting. The story-line of Jude the Obscure, in brief, is as follows: Jude Fawley, an orphan, lives in a small village in Hampshire (Hardy's Upper Wessex). His parents have already died, and he lives with his strong minded unmarried aunt Drusilla, (played by the sublime June Whitfield), who runs the village bakery. Jude adores books and idolises his school teacher. This teacher moves away to the university town of 'Christchuch' (Oxford in Thomas Hardy's renaming system) - kindling a fire in Jude to do likewise. After an ill-advised marriage to the pragmatic and worldly Arabella, he moves to Christchurch after qualifying as a stonemason. There he meets his educated cousin, Sue Bridehead, and they begin an affair after her marriage breaks down (to his former school teacher). As his scholastic ambitions have come to nothing - he places all his former zeal and the feet of this 'goddess', played by Kate Winslet in the film.Shortly after this, Jude's son from his first marriage comes to live with them, and they have two children of their own. Due to the punitive social mores of the time, they find accommodation impossible, and young Jude (little Father Time), in one of literature's most shocking scenes, kills himself and his two younger siblings, due to his mistaking a too advanced comment from Sue, that she lets fall. The contrite Sue enters a self-flagellatory existence of strict religion and returns to her husband, and Jude falls into his vice of alcoholism. The film deviates here and there, from the book, but not in any significant way. This film was not particularly well received at the time, but the years have been kind to the film, and it now seems to be recognised for the masterpiece that it is. My only slight quibble is not using the real location as a pretext for making the scenery bleaker than it really was. In Hardy adaptations, it adds significant power, witnessing the pain of the protagonists against the beautiful landscape of Hardy's beautiful and beloved Dorset.

Heart-renchingly Good
Jude is a fantastic film, not one for the prude, as it contains some graphic nudity, and a very graphic birth scene that i wish i had been warned about, based on the novel Jude The Obscure by Thomas Hardy, it is a tragic love story like no other, christerpher ecleston and Kate Winslet shine in this film about love that shoudnt be, the content of this film was so beautifully told and yet heartbreaking that it takes a while to get over, a must see for any period, winslet or ecleston fans, truely wonderful.

A fine film
The most disturbing scene in this otherwise compelling film is that of sibling murder and child suicide. The 1996 Micheal Winterbottom film is a fine study about seeking knowledge by a man from the inappropriate class background. Jude, a stonemason also co-habits after his impulsively emotional reaction to his great love, his cousin, Sue. Jude's first shotgun wedding doesn't produce a child but a divorce. The cinematography is wonderful. The city poverty well presented, for millions, worse than this was their reality. It's like postcard poverty. Jude's relationship with Sue Bridehead, his cousin, creates a social taboo. One very telling scene is of Jude showing his learning as he recites the Latin Lord's Prayer. He turns to drink. He wanted to study at a University. Winterbottom shows very well Thomas Hardy's key symbolic representations in a novel which drew severe critical comment on its publication. A fine film. Jude played by the talented Christopher Eccleston and Sue by the reliable Kate Winslet.

A BBC adaptation. Classic literature turned into soft porn.
Not the story many love, touched by the malign hand of the BBC who believe a sex scene is necessary for something to count as entertainment. Work of a genius ruined by people who have no idea what their ordinance actually want. Who buys a TV license now?

Beautifully documented misery!
Almost true to the book, which I only read once because it was so miserable and depressing. Beautifully filmed, but the ending is not true to the book and it would have been better to have put it in rather than the lame, unfinished end. I was waiting for the rest to happen when the credits came up! In the book Jude becomes seriously ill and as he waits in hopeful delirium for Sue Bridehead to return and care for him in his last illness, it's his cunning and worldly ex-wife, recently returned from Australia, who actually tends to him on his death-bed. It wouldn't have taken up five minutes of the film to put in this accurate conclusion, which is actually quite touching, instead of just ending with Jude screaming in the rain! Unfortunately, despite the lush realism - the birth scene being gorily unnecessary - the book itself is very depressing in its subject matter and the film is no cheerful rom-com either. Watch it if you love Hardy but it'll leave you depressed and dissatisfied with the ending.

Beautiful
A totally engaging beautiful, poignant, and well constructed film of joy; a little humour, and many tears; with superb performances from Kate Winslet, and Christopher Eccleston, supported by a magnificent cast. A wonderful cinematic experience. Withstands repeat viewings, when many others disappoint on second time round. A most worthwhile investment for any serious DVD collection. I paid 0.36gbp Condition: Used Very Good; it plays as stated.

if you are feeling depressed and want cheering up then this is not the film you should watch as jude lurches from one disaster to another.dont get me wrong it is an excellent movie great acting fantastic scenery but the subjects very dark,i have seen many horror movies and never had nightmares because of them but one scene in this film did and you will know which one when you see it.however dark the story it is a film you will enjoy im not really sure why i do maybe because we enjoy gloom and misery as much as joy and happiness.
