Very solid book first fantasy of mine hehe

I stumbled over "A Song of Ice and Fire: A Game of Thrones" more accidently than on purpose. I was always partial to the genre, but have to admit that I first came across the TV show and then across the books. But since I love to lose myself in the written word, I just bought the book. I find the book to be very well written, though I understand when people say it is hard to keep up with all those characters. Though written out of many different points of view, the author manages to give each and every one of them a unique voice that is recognized without problems. And the appendix helps a great deal if you get lost with who is related to whome, who has alliances, and who hates each other to the core of their being. What I liked most about the characters is that there is no black and white, only shades of grey. Some characters may be more likable then others, but no character is flawless and no character without a redeeming quality. And some characters simply cannot be figuered out by reading just the first book. Altogether, the characters are more real than in most books that crossed my bedsidetable over the years. Their relationships are not perfect. They argue, they find true friendship, they loath, they love and sometimes they are just as confused as we all are. I admire the author for sticking with authenticity, especially in regard for the world he creates on the book's pages. The different places - regardless if it is Winterfell, King's Landing or the Dothraki Sea - come alive, with all their sounds and smells and people. It is a true medival world and not a romantisized fantasy of it. Especially when we see through Sansa's eyes we can see the contrast between reality and what we like to think is real very clearly. This is also true for the ages of the characters. The Stark children are between three and fourteen; Denaerys thirteen when she is married off. It might shock some readers, but it simply is more real then not. The language may also be different from what readers are used to by common fantasy literature. People talk like people talk, with all the grace and courtesy they can manage or all the profanity that escapes their mouths. And if you have a problem with explicit descriptions, you may want to consider reading something else. I can only recommend the book. I bought the next two before I finished this one and am half way through the next even though I just finished this one last night. It is a great piece of literature! -------- Ich bin eher zufällig über "A Song of Ice and Fire: A Game of Thrones" gestolpert, als dass ich den Kauf schon länger geplant hätte. Ich habe zwar das Genre schon immer gemocht, muss aber zugeben, dass ich zuerst die Serie kannte und dann die Bücher gefunden habe. Aber da ich mich gerne im geschriebenen Wort verliere, habe ich das Buch einfach mal gekauft. Ich finde das Buch ist sehr gut geschrieben, auch wenn ich verstehe, wenn viele Leute sagen, dass es schwer ist, so viele Charaktere im Blick zu behalten. Auch wenn die Geschichte aus vielen Perspektiven erzählt wird: Der Autor schafft es, jedem seiner Protagonisten eine individuelle und wiedererkennbare Stimme zu verleihen. Und der Anhang hilft, wenn man nicht mehr weiß, wer mit wem verwandt ist, wer eine Allianz hat oder wer wen mit Leib und Seele hasst. Was mir an den Charakteren am besten gefallen hat, ist, dass es keine scharfe Trennlinie zwischen gut und böse gibt, sondern nur den Regenbogen der dazwischen liegt. Auch wenn einige Charaktere sympathischer sind als andere, ist keiner ohne Fehl und Tadel und jeder hat mindestens eine ausgleichende gute Eigenschaft. Und aus dem einen oder anderen wird man nach nur einem Buch einfach nicht schlau. Insgesamt sind die Charaktere sehr viel wirklicher, als in den meisten Bücher, die über die Jahre auf meinem Nachttisch gelandet sind. Ihre Beziehungen sind nicht perfekt. Sie streiten, sie finden wahre Freundschaft, sie hassen und sie lieben und manchmal sind sie einfach nur genau so verwirrt, wie der Rest der Welt auch. Ich bewundere den Autor dafür, dass er etwas authentisches geschaffen hat, besonders was die Welt angeht, die auf den Seiten des Buches entsteht. Die verschiedenen Orte - egal ob Winterfell oder King's Landing - werden lebendig mit all ihren Geräuschen und Gerüchen und Menschen. Es ist eine echte mittelalterliche Welt und keine romatinische Vorstellung von ihr. Besonders wenn wir sie mal wieder durch Sansas Augen betrachten, können wir den Kontrast zwischen Realität und Minnegesang deutlich sehen. Dies trifft übrigens auch auf das Alter der Charaktere zu. Die Kinder der Starks sind zwischen drei und vierzehn; Denaerys gerade mal dreizehn, als sie verheiratet wird. Das mag manche Leser schockieren, aber es ist einfach näher an der Realität dieses Zeitalters. Die Sprache mag auch von dem Abweichen, was man als Leser von Fantasybüchern so gewohnt ist. Leute reden hier wie Leute eben reden. Mal mit aller Gewandheit und Höflichkeit, die sie aufbieten können und mal allenn Obszönitäten, die ihren Lippen entgleiten. Und wer ein Problem mit eindeutigen Beschreibungen hat, sollte vielleicht doch etwas anderes lesen. Ich kann das Buch nur empfehlen. Ich hatte die nächsten zwei schon gekauft, bevor ich mit diesem durch war. Und ich bin schon halb durch das nächste, obwohl ich erst gestern mit dem hier fertig geworden bin. Ein wirklich großartiges Stück Fantasy-Literatur!
