Blackwing Long Point Sharpener

I was shocked that everywhere I went to buy a Blackwing (at a Brick and Mortar) didn't sell sharpeners so I was excited to find the actual Blackwing sharpener online. This arrived faster than quoted and works great! Highly recommend!

I'm a Mitsubishi pencil fan, so it took me awhile to come around to Blackwings. But they really are great pencils, and this is a great sharpener. It sharpens in two stages, one pulls back the wood, the other sharpens the lead. Excellent.

My daughter absolutely loves this and her new black wing pencils. She cannot believe how sharp the pencils are and how much better than the mechanical ones she has always used for math.

Once I discovered Blackwing pencils, I have a difficult time using any other. My favorite Blackwing is the standard. It's soft, dark, and erases so beautifully. But this is a review for the sharpener. This sharpener hones the pencil tip to needle sharpness. It sharpens evenly. It's smooth. I've gone through 36 pencils and I sharpen them often and it still sharpens like new. It comes with an extra blade but I haven't had to use it yet. The little lid stays put until you're ready to empty the shavings. I love my Blackwing pencils so much, that I use them down to the metal eraser shaft.

I'm a proofreader, so I often have to sharpen my blue proofreader's pencil. I don't have an electric one at my desk and I like mechanical ones better. The two blades create a really long and sharp point to the pencil. I'm so used to writing very hard that I had to get used to writing softer after sharpening a pencil with this, otherwise the tip would break. This is nothing against the sharpener or the pencil, it's simply how I write. When I started using a softer touch, I broke the tip less and found out that the pencil writes just as dark as it did when I wrote a lot harder. The sharpener also holds a lot of shavings before having to empty it. The shavings don't fall out of the two slots, even when the sharpener bobbles because of its rounded edges.

Had this ages ago, purchased in an art store, and loved it but it was eventually stepped on and broken. Needing to replace it, I saw they now had one with a hexagonal profile but ordered the oval profile sharpener, like I had before, because it is longer giving space for shavings to go . Thought that was worth the extra 6 bucks. Received the hexagonal profile one instead so paid extra for nothing. I'm not returning for a replacement because looking at the reviews, which i didn't do beforehand because i thought i knew what i was getting, I'll likely just receive another hexagonal one.And I was right about the hexagonal one needing more space for shavings: to sharpen a dull pencil I had to empty it twice because the only space for the shavings is right above the blade blocking the view to see if the lead reached the stop line. It sharpens well like my previous one but i will purchase a different brand next time I'm in Jerry's artarama and toss this one as it's just too messy requiring a not usually handy trash can to use while out and about (and when i'm not out and about I use my battery operated sharpener which gives me a longer point).Very disappointing.
