Novel Idea
The only problem is that you can only make one sandwich at a time. I had 3 sandwiches to make in Texas Summer weather over the gas grill. This really was not fun. I might try it with pie crust in the Winter. I tried to season it on the gas stove inside but it smoked up the whole kitchen so I moved outside to the grill. The sandwiches were great and it works great, just too labor intensive for the outcome.

Love sandwiches made in a pie iron
I use this panini press to make sandwiches on the camp chef grill, open fire and stove top. Makes perfect panini sandwiches and adds some fun to the process for the entire family. Great times to be had when you make dinner - custom sandwiches with the family. The only issue I have with Rome products is the amount of work necessary to season the irons before use. No doubt that the irons will last two lifetimes after a proper seasoning and some minor upkeep. Do your self a favor and buy a few of the pie irons, good food and fun times as a family.

VERY GOOD for CAMPING, Stovetop use great if you know how to use it right!
I ordered this Panini press because it looked so big, heavy and sturdy. We have been using our much smaller panini press on our stovetop for years, but since it was so small, we ended up making 2-3 sandwiches per person, so we were on a lookout for a bigger one. I have to mention here that sandwiches that come out of those combersome-looking long-handled panini grills in general are far superior than the ones made in electric devices!! That being said, this was our first ambiguous experience at first, BUT THE SELLER WAS SO NICE, and refunded without asking for the product to be returned, so... we kept the press, and tried it again.. There is a learning curve for everything! This press is VERY VERY good when used in campfire. It is a bit too heavy/bulky, just perfect for camping. For your home use there are nuances. You have to make sure it heats up EVENLY and THOROUGHLY before you put the sandwich in. Then it works wonders! If you place your panini in a cold press, and then start heating, then yes, it will take much longer to warm up, and the sandwich will come out sort of "steamed" more than grilled. Knowing how to use it properly ensures that you have a superior outcome!! However, like I said, the seller was really nice, which made me try the product again and update my review!

awkward size
It is very long and large. It may work great for BBQ, but not at my kitchen cooking stove. It may be a good product (at least the cast iron part) but regular sliced bread doesn't fit in it. The handles are screwed in the cast iron parts and don't seem to be robust enough. So, I kept this tool in a storage for future bbq. I can make good panini using 2 cast iron skillet at a cooking stove.

Works very well
I followed the instructions on seasoning the cast iron and I followed normal cooking instructions (which are not the instructions on the package) by heating the cast iron before putting my sandwich in it. I heated it for 2 minutes on each side, and cooked the sandwich for about the same and it was perfect. I used canola oil to season the iron and pam spray for cooking. I look forward to using it again. I opted for this one because normal pudgie/hobo pie irons are barely big enough for a slice of wonder bread, and I wanted more food without having to make multiple sandwiches. I am very happy with making this decision. The iron fits a six inch hoagie/sub roll very well and cooks it exceptionally. I would recommend this for a cuban style sandwich especially. The handles remove well for traveling, and they have a little widget that keeps the handles together while cooking.

Handles were loose along with the panini maker. The ...
Handles were loose along with the panini maker. The cast iron was true, but it was just too heavy on the front and the sticks weren't enough to hold it.

How can you live without this!
My best buy! Breads don't stick and I have never had a messy panini out of this press. Each panini takes about 1.5 minutes (45 seconds each side once you have it preheated). If at all I have any complaints, that would be: 1. the latch that keeps slipping down to the mould. I wish the ridge in the middle was slighltly bigger to prevent the hook from dropping all the way down. I might be able to have a creative hack - perhaps just tie a wire. 2. the width is a bit on the narrow side - I feel 1/2" extra would let the store bought breads sit comfortably. Both of the above not a big deal. Very satisfied in general and would highly highly recommend to anyone on the fence about this one.

Great panini maker
I needed to lose weight in order to lower my blood pressure and I decided to cut back on my caloric intake.Cooking for myself I thought that vegetarian panini's would help me control my weight. This panini maker is just what I needed.Buying club rolls at my nearby bakery,I hollowed them out and filled them with all kinds of vegetables and low fat cheeses. After spraying the inside with olive oil,and on a low-medium flame, this cooker cooked the panini to prefection in 6 minutes (three minutes on either side).Voila perfect, crunchy panini.Since it's solid cast iron it will last a life time!!

Great item, heavy duty item. Seasoned it as instructed and made pizza paninis for the family using Pillsbury pizza dough. Turned out perfectly. Handles could be longer are the only fault. Will be using it many times trying many fillings thru out the year. Always ensure you keep oiled between uses.

Ich hab das Eisen auf dem Grill eingebrannt und auch schon Paninis damit geröstet. Das Gerät ist sehr schwer, aber beim campen und Grillen perfeckt.
