Doesn’t transfer video from old camcorders
I had no use for this however because it doesnt work to transfer video from my old camcorder. If you need it for that, make sure you get the right adapter... like from FireWire to thunderbolt if you have a mac

this product is a waste of money and will do nothing but get your ...
Don't buy this, it does NOT work. Video can only be downloaded through and IEEE 1394 port and cannot be transferred through a USB by any means be it this adapter or some kind of cord. You NEED the port I mentioned, this product is a waste of money and will do nothing but get your hopes up. A port is not that hard to install, it just plugs into the mother board after you make room on the back of your computer. I bought one with instructions and was able to put it in.

May work for you!
It did not work for me and the drive I wanted to connect but may work for you. Many other reviews reported success. I knew it was a gamble. I don't think is the actual product but my firewire drive is old. Apple stopped making connection on it's Desktop computers a while back and this external did not include a USB or other means of connecting to the computer. Worth the money worth a try.

Great connector
I needed this connector to connect a mic preamp to a laptop. No issues, well made.

Great Deal. Very Good Quality. GREAT ADAPTER.
Very good quality. Great to have on hand to test repaired projects. These adapters do work when our techs have to trouble shoot older unis that used Firewire. Try to mate a USB to Firewire without them! I wish the industry would settle on ONE cord (hint HDMI) and not Firewire, SATA, not USB 1, 2, 3, C or Z (I know there's no Z!). Not only that, but these connectors (USB, HDMI, etc.) should 'click' into place (like the Ethernet connectors - but, with a connector that doesn't invole the hands of a surgeon to insert eight wires into eight tiny slots. We need to go back o the K.I.S.S. method (Keep It Simple Stupid). Let's face it, you spend more on a cold beer than you do on these adapters.

While I am sure it works great for some applications
While I am sure it works great for some applications, it was not compatible with what I needed it for. If you intend to connect a PreSonus 16x4x2 digital mixing board to a Windows system, you will have to invest in a FireWire internal card, it cannot adapt through this adaptor to a USB port.

Does not work. Dangerous to use
Bought this for a Presonus Digital Mixer. I was getting a new laptop that does not have Firewire (the only protocol this mixer uses) so I wanted to test if it could communicate via USB through an adapter or if I needed to sell it and get a new mixer. Not only did it not work, I got a very disconcerting message from my computer about a voltage surge and how it was shutting off because it was dangerous to the motherboard. Since then, I get digital distortion from the mixer when connected to the computer (I haven't tested it in live settings) but I suspect it damaged my mixer too. This adapter did not cost $7, it cost $1500...

Use on Thunderbolt or Type C USB
This works great but you need to understand what it is and how to use it. It will not connect a firewire device to a USB input on a computer, but it did allow me to connect my firewre device to a USB Type C or Tunderbolt input with this adapter.https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015Z7XE0A/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1with both of these adapters together it works great. Standard USB is not compatible with firewire but USB type C is.
