Great little vice for small projects/small desk.
This is an interesting little vice, you can either hard-mount it like a traditional vice, or you can attach the included clamping leg and then clamp it to your bench/desk.At the moment I haven't decided if I want to put holes in the top of this desk, so I've just got it clamped. The clamp locks it down surprisingly well, but I still wouldn't torque on it too much just due to the fact that it is a very small vice.It is perfect for holding small projects and it does come with a set of rubber soft-jaws to keep from marring your work piece. The jaws are listed at 3.3in wide and it opens with about a 2in throat so it's big enough to hold model airplanes while working on them or even some minor carving or small project sanding jobs. It has a built-in anvil, but I wouldn't use it for anything other then soft objects like wood or plastic. It's hard to review this like a normal vice because I always want a bigger/beefier vice for holding stuff, but this is the opposite of that and it takes deliberate effort to avoid comparing it to full-size vices. For the size and purpose, it really is a nice little vice and the kids love using it precisely because of how small and easy it is to use.

Outstanding little vice
My husky48-in tool chest's wood top does not hang over the sides so I did not use the clamping method. I threw that part away and chose to lag screw it on to the top of the bench. It looks cleaner this way anyways. I drilled three pilot holes and then bolted this to my bench top. It feels very secure. I don't need a very large vise and don't really do anything that require a lot of stress on this vise. But there are times when you need an extra hand or need to hold something in place when this vice is going to come in extremely handy. It's very well made and I appreciate that it has some plastic covers to cover the teeth for working on things that would be damaged by the teeth of the vise. I just keep them on there and close the vise. I'm able to take them off whenever I don't need them. This is the perfect size vise for what I need and I highly recommend it.

Poorly engineered! Do not buy this item!
First, the two screws that are supposed to connect the top to the base (that clamps to the table) don't actually engage the two pieces of hardware and their connection is not flush. The diamter and threading of the holes don't match. Therefore, the table clamp is not usable at all. Next, there are no instructions or assembly information. Finally, the two rubber guards provided to cover the metal vice (for softly gripping a more delicate material) were cut too small to properly fit over that surface.

Not bad
Well made and durable. Hard to keep secured to my bench.

Very Nice Portable Vice
First bear in mind that this is a small portable vice, and not a heavy-duty bench vice. I have reviewed it as a portable vice. This vice is quite sturdy for its size and can be clamped to anything from a half inch thick to 4 inches thick. It can also be permanently mounted to a flat surface if you are only looking for a small vice. The jaws are knurled and come with a par of rubber covers to prevent delicate items from being scratched. All the parts fit as expected and the vice is as sturdy as the structure it is attached to. The screw works very smoothly if properly lubricated ( I use a Teflon & graphite combination lubricant ). NOTE that the anvil surface is NOT machined. The base screw also comes with a protective rubber cap, but because the screw tightens to the bottom or back of most objects I rarely use it. Bottom line - this is a very serviceable Small Portable Vice !
