This book taught me so much!
I’m currently studying journalism, and this book is the best book on journalism that I have ever read! It’s so much better (and cheaper) than journalism textbooks. I learned so much about the history of the craft and journalism values. The book also discusses article writing in theoretical and practical terms. Not only do I better understand what features, news, editorials and blogs are but I also learned how to write them in a way that will attract readers. This book also helps me understand the current state of journalism like the financial and ideological difficulties that newspaper and magazine publishers are going through.Even though the book is packed with lots of great information, the tone is light and the author is funny and hip. In addition to examining classic literature and publications, he references popular culture and samples edgy publications too. Moreover, he draws journalism lessons from other fields like finance, psychology and medicine. Really cool insights ...I was really excited that the author devoted a lot of time and space to interviews with people like Roy Peter Clark, Dave Barry and Andrew McCarthy. The author didn’t cut their input short, and the long quotations were fascinating. The section on style summarized so many tips that I’ve read about in style guides but had trouble integrating. I’ve been using the style section to write papers in my coursework. Finally, I want to freelance someday and this book offers some great tips on how to hook up with sites like Mediabistro or Writer’s Digest. This book is great for everybody from the budding writer to the veteran journalist. This book taught me so much!Just a great buy—totally worth it.

Throwing in the Towel ...
Although I liked the information contained in The Complete Guide to Article Writing, the writing is so stiff and structured, I reached the point where I said, "Why am I doing this to myself?" (I rarely reach the point where I abandon a book. I may come back to it later after I rest my brain.)One of the first challenges I had with this book was Chapter 1, "A Primer on Style" (52 pages on grammar). It was like reading the phone book backwards. Why anyone would lead with this type of dense material as their first chapter I am unsure. Don't get me wrong the chapter is excellent but it's tedious to read. For the most part, the book is written much in the style of an academic journal. Nothing wrong with this either but it did not engage me.Other books that I have found more useful, all written by successful freelance practitioners, are The Byline Bible by Susan Shapiro, The Essential Guide to Freelance Writing by Zachary Petit, and Writer for Hire by Kelly James-Enger. All excellent! All engaging and chucked full of tips for anyone wanting to break into freelance writing.

Good Ideas on Increasing your Article Output without Sacrificing Quality
I found this full of useful ideas on how to put in place a 'production line' for articles. I don't recall him expressing it this way but I'd summarise the main point as being, '...if you can write one article on a topic, you can write many...' He then provides some ideas, which are not rocket science but simple good sense, on how to put yourself in a position to do so. If you're to produce volume for online article submission sites, while not sacrificing quality, these ideas make sense.

This is a great guide for anyone beginning to write articles or or that needs to brush up their writing skills. It is very thorough and begins with a history of article journalism. I am somewhat of a novice and was hoping for a step by step type of instruction; but after reading this book I understand why a step by step method is not possible for article writing and am learning so much from this book. I bought it because I will be needing to write some online articles in the near future and would not want to attempt it without the insight that this book gives.

This books is a must for high school or college!
I bought this book for my College son who is writing for his schools newspaper. He tells me this book has been very helpful and uses it to proof read his articles. To my surprise, my high school daughter is also using it to improve her writing skills. She is taking AP Literature in high school, and her teacher said her improvement in writing has gone up from struggling to mastering. I never thought this book would help so much. I have never written reviews but I felt I needed to spread the word about this book. Its very easy to understand and follow.

Very indepth, I learned things I had never heard before. This covers a lot about writing in general, and includes grammar and structure as well. Well worth the money...my only caveat is the print is a little smaller than usual, but there is so much information here, so I understand why they chose the smaller point font/typography.

Not what its title suggests
Don't be fooled by the title: It sounds like you can learn to write any type of article but the author writes medical articles and all the examples are geared towards that market. Disappointed, I did not finish it.

OK but doesn't follow his own advice
It's an OK read, although I felt the author didn't follow his own advice in keeping things simple and easy to read. I actually had to get my dictionary out to look up a few obscure words (which I don't often do). There are some interesting chapters about the structure of article and how to get published.

Great book.
Super informative and easy to read. I actually had signed it out of my local library and ended up buying a copy that same night because it was filled with too much information to not have on hand all the time.
