Excellent performing mouse (especially for Macs)
Both my Macbook Pro and iMac perform terribly with foreign mice and Apple's "mighty mouse" performance is pretty bad in my opinion. As such, this has turned out to be an excellent performing mouse that addressed that issue completely. Not only does the mouse perform excellently but the Microsoft drivers allow it to function like a normal, proper mouse should (even when being used with a Mac). It only takes a few seconds of tweaking the settings after installing the driver and you're good to go. This proved to work so well that I eventually got two of these. I have the smaller version for my laptop (had it for almost 2 years now without any issues) and later got this bigger one for the iMac. I do feel like a bit of a sucker paying $20+ for something as basic as a mouse... but that's life I suppose. Considering how much it improves my experience when working on either Mac, it's well worth every penny. Anyway, as far as this mouse goes... 1) Battery life is quite good ( I don't think I replace the rechargeable battery I use more than once a month) 2) Ergonomically they're pretty good 3) The performance (of the little blue laser) is very good but won't work *everywhere* but will work quite well on many surfaces. 4) It's easy to switch on and off 5) The USB "fob" is extremely tiny and quite elegant 6) The USB "fob" stores very neatly into the bottom of the mouse What else is there? It naturally works just as you'd expect with a PC but the real magic happens when you install the drivers, tweak the settings for a moment and use this with a Mac. Bliss.

Great substitute for MS "Explorer" 5-Button Mini mouse
UPDATE NOV 2021: still a great mouse, comfortable enough to use for hours, and everything in my earlier review below holds true. I have one at my desk and another in my travel bag, and just bought another one as backup! However, I wanted to post a caution: when the mouse gets old, DON'T try to clean the wheel. I just destroyed the wheel when cleaning the overall mouse. Rest of the surfaces de-gooked nicely, but the rubber on the wheel is very soft to begin with, and was by this time so old that it started disintegrating. ------------- Original review follows ------------- We used Microsoft Explorer Blue-track 5-button Mini mice for years, both in office and travel. Must have owned half a dozen, and still have an unopened one. They're no longer made, and the few units available from third-party sellers are crazy expensive. After looking at a number of 4- and 5-button wireless mice, the Wireless Mobile 4000 is the best substitute we've found, and the price is GREAT. We've bought four of them (2 for office and 2 for travel) and at five months of use, all are performing flawlessly. We have not observed any of the issues cited in other reviews. Pros: - Ergonomically very similar to the Explorer mouse - Battery life about as long as the Explorer mouse, even if the mouse is never turned off -- 3-5 months for us - Smooth wheel action - Low-profile dongle Cons: - Only 4 buttons (I can live without a "forward" button, but a "back" button is absolutely essential)

The MS 4000 is by far the BEST mouse I've ever owned
The table where I use my computer has a glossy surface. A café that I go to has glass-topped tables. Until I started using the MS 4000, I always had to use a mouse pad. The MS 4000 works on every surface that I've tried. And it works flawlessly! I've heard that there was an overheating problem with the USB receiver. They fixed it. Mine never gets hot. I leave it in the computer all the time because it's so small and it doesn't snag on anything when I put my notebook in its case. Some people have complained that the mouse pointer sometimes fails to move smoothly. I've had this happen, too. But, on my computer, it's not caused by the mouse! I have the same problem with the built-in touchpad. My cursor lockups are caused by software; usually it's caused by software that's accessing the Internet and waiting for a response. For example, I get mini lockups when my antivirus software updates itself. It also happens sometimes when mail is being downloaded. To repeat: my mouse works smoothly and does not cause lockups on my computer! Another benefit: the low battery LED has often reminded me to pack an extra battery. It's pretty accurate, too. My battery usually dies within a half day after the LED warns me of immanent failure. My alkaline batteries (Amazon Basics brand) seem to last forever. The mouse can be switched off when it's not in use. I use this feature often and the switch shows no sign of wearing out. The MS 4000 is the BEST mouse I've ever owned. I've been using mine since March of this year when I bought my first MS 4000 on Amazon. I'm on Amazon today to buy another - as a gift not a replacement. My mouse is still going strong!

Quality varies
I'll start by saying that I love this mouse, but it is only fair to say that the one I just purchased is the fourth one I've bought, and the one it is replacing lasted less than six months before the left button stopped working--too late for an Amazon return, and Microsoft makes returns for such inexpensive items impractical. I watched a YouTube video on disassembling the mouse for cleaning (not guaranteed to solve the problem) and concluded that it made more sense just to buy a new one. My first wireless mouse was the BlueTrack Mobile Mouse 6000 Wireless, purchased in September 2009. In February 2010, it flamed out rather dramatically: the nano transceiver became too hot to touch, and the mouse stopped working. I ordered a replacement, and it lasted till January 2013 before self-destructing in the same dramatic way. By that time Microsoft had apparently decided that model was a poor design and had stopped making it, so I bought my first Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000 from Staples the same day (having become hooked on wireless, I didn't want to go even one day with a corded mouse). In August 2015, seeing that model at Amazon for what seemed like a good price, I ordered #2 as a backup. It was placed in service in October 2016 and is actually still functioning, but the on-off switch had become a little iffy, and the transceiver frequently lost contact, so in December 2018 I placed in service #3, also ordered from Amazon. As noted, it failed a few days ago (May 26, 2019), to be replaced with #4. All of the first three have been battery hogs; In the first two, I had to replace the battery about once a month; #3 has given me about two months per battery. Admittedly, I use a mouse probably more than most people, but the estimate of "up to 10 months" for battery life is unreasonable. Other reviewers have stated that this mouse is not as well made as it used to be. That may be true, or it may just be that there is an occasional lemon. When it is working, it is a very good mouse. I especially like the nano transceiver and the way it is stored (not that I ever need to store it) and the placement of the power button, which makes it easy to thumb it off and on (I turn it off when I leave the computer). I have small hands, and this mouse is a good size for me and very comfortable to use.

This mouse does not disappoint and battery life is phenomenal...
I absolutely love this mouse! I have been using it for school for about a year and a half and am only on the second battery, I have left it on overnight numerous times and still get amazing battery life. This thing is a juggernaut when it comes to battery life! My first battery lasted about a year. It is very small and portable, I like that the usb dongle actually inserts flush into the bottom of the mouse for storage, although I usually just leave it in the laptop since it is so small. This mouse is surprisingly comfortable considering how little it is. I have dropped this mouse off of tables many times and it is still running strong. It works on every surface that I have tried it on, including glass. Pros: - Small and portable - Comfortable to use (at least for me) - Dongle stores inside the mouse so it won't get lost - Dongle is so small it is hardly noticeable when in the computer and does not interfere with my case - Has worked with every computer I have put it in, usually it works right away even though it says it is installing drivers, though I have not used it in a mac - Button on side of mouse is handy, I guess it can be set to perform different functions, but I have not tried yet. From the factory thumb button goes back when surfing the web and can come in handy sometimes - There is a light on the top to let you know when the battery is dying (blinking red) or when the mouse turns on (green) - Well made quality construction - Great battery life, common battery (one AA) Cons: - This mouse may be a bit small if you have large hands - If you are a battery salesman you will not like this mouse as it doesn't burn through batteries very quickly

Love this!
Absolutely loved this mouse mostly for its perfect size for my relatively big palms and it's quietness. Never had issues connecting or with batteries. Although it's no longer my main mouse, still works well after over 5 years.

Excellent All-Purpose Mouse
[Time owned: a couple months now] Pros: - Tracks well - Fully customizable actions - Smooth scroll wheel Cons: - Smooth scrolling causes problems for gaming (fixable) My dad used to have an old Microsoft mouse which I really liked because the scroll wheel had a glide to it, instead of just clicking along. I bought this mouse for the tracking tech but was pleasantly surprised to find the same style of smooth scroll wheel. I don't know why, it's just a really pleasant feeling. The downside to this, though, is that it makes some things hard to control in games. For instance, switching items in Minecraft or weapons in Battlefield is totally unwieldy with default settings. There is a way to fix this, though. In Control Panel -> Hardware -> Mice, select Wheel, then click the link which allows you to turn off smooth scrolling for certain applications. Select your games from the list or browse to their .exe files. Another great thing about this mouse is the customizability and the number of actions you can perform with it. The included software integrates right into Control Panel and allows you to assign just about anything you can imagine to any button on the mouse. Want the side button to spin your character around 180 degrees in an FPS? You can do that, and also have it switch open windows when you're on your desktop. All of this works seamlessly. Microsoft even bundles an Expose-like application switcher with the software. Definitely the best mouse I've ever owned. Would absolutely recommend it.

Does everything I need for great price-amazing little device
I purchased this with another from Amazon after several failed ones I purchased at local stores, their brands and other brands which failed after a month or so. This one is a bit more precise than the other one which was a little less money although for the price of either of them, I see no reason to spend more money for a wireless mouse. This does everything I need with no issues after 60 days, battery life is good, I never turn off as recommended just because I don't think of this. Like all wireless mice, I did not realize until after trial and error- you will need to sync them at times using the small button which can be hard to locate and always keep your Microsoft updates up to date. This can affect the performance, not just for this because it is that brand but for all. I thought it had died and or battery was issue, it worked on another computer though, I found out it was out of sync. Great mouse for great price, I surf web a lot, work on spreadsheets from home using this and lots of data analysis, this has worked fine. I don't see any reason to purchase one with higher price as I wont use the additional bells and whistles, this does it all. Once using a wireless mouse you cant go back to anything else, I seem to be able to work quicker not moving the wire around.
