A sadistic mastermind unleashes a twisted form of justice in SPIRAL, the terrifying new chapter from the book of SAW. Working in the shadow of an esteemed police veteran (Samuel L. Jackson), brash Detective Ezekiel 'Zeke' Banks (Chris Rock) and his rookie partner (Max Minghella) take charge of a grisly investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city's gruesome past. Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer's morbid game. SPIRAL stars Chris Rock, Max Minghella, Marisol Nichols, and Samuel L. Jackson, and is produced by the original SAW team of Mark Burg and Oren Koules. The film is directed by Darren Lynn Bousman and written by Josh Stolberg & Pete Goldfinger. Review: Great disc, decent storyline. - The Atmos mix on this disc is absolutely unbelievable and gave my 12 inch subwoofer a very proper workout. The video was pristine and crystal clear and holds true to the much-vaunted 4k disc superiority in imaging and sound. The storyline is standard Saw fare sprinkled with a few surprise twists here and there. All in all: quite satisfactory. It's unfortunate that this 4k release never saw its' way to Canada. As usual, the U.S. desertcart site promptly delivered the disc and even threw in the accompanying slip cover to boot! Congrats! Review: My Favorite Sequel in the Franchise - Fortunately, this was not as gory as other Saw sequels. But it has the twists we expect from this franchise.

Saw meets police procedural
With an impressive cast and crew behind Spiral, and following in the footsteps of a well respected horror franchise, I had fairly high expectations for this movie. By and large, those expectations were met, but even as much as I wanted to love the movie, I have to admit some of the magic is gone. A lot of what made the Saw movies great is present in this movie, including some horrifyingly interesting philosophical or moral conundrums and devilishly terrifying traps. Also present are some new elements. Most notably, the movie emphasizes the police procedural/murder mystery side of things in a way the prior films haven't. And while we've all seen more than our share of such movies in the past, applying those ideas to the Saw franchise does breathe a bit of new life into the series. However, enough is missing that it just doesn't quite feel like a Saw movie. It's not a spoiler to point out that the original Jigsaw is absent, as is the now-iconic Billy the Puppet. Without those, one can't help but wonder whether Spiral might have been better served just telling its own story instead of trying to tie it into an established mythology. To the extent that Saw fans have disliked Saw, I think that's the reason why. Even still, at the end of the day, Spiral is a well-made movie that tells a good story and is, despite its flaws, well worth a watch.

Intriguing and keeps you on edge
Has quite a few twists and turns that will keep you interested and wanting to know what will happen next. Might be a bit gory for some; but it's spaced out thru the movie so that it does NOT seem like one big blood fest! Characters were all interestingly written so as to keep you watching. All in all one that you will like watching. (especially if you like murder mysteries combined with a little horror)

I liked it
Package arrived intact. I had to buy this DVD because I have to own all the DVDs of a horror series. I'm oldschool OCD like that. Chris Rock is surprisingly good in this movie. I thought my leg was being pulled when I first heard of a Saw type movie with him in it. I found the movie fun. It's not as gruesome as other Saw movies, but has some interesting traps. I mean, we watch these movies for the traps don't we? An overall entertaining movie, I can't complain.

The Downward Spiral of Disappointment
Spoilers :: Spiral assumingly attempts to evoke the unsettling familiarity of the Saw franchise while being its own creation of its own self. A police procedural-like format that ultimately leaves the viewers wanting more. This movie feels like a pilot episode to a Saw inspired CSI or Law and Order. Not saying this is inherently bad, but leaves much to be desired. You are welcomed to an initial scene reminiscent of that classic Saw flavor, but everything there after feels half-baked. They played it too safe with very few "traps" and hiding the gore that makes these movies as successful as they truly are... it really feels like a made for TV spin off. Despite it supposed to be a spin off. The pacing is odd in this film. It feels rushed and the traditional twist unveiling at the end is haphazardly conducted. Rather predictable and without much context feels jarring. It plays out like a TV pilot episode for a slightly more scary CSI or Law and Order than an entry in the universe the movies built up. Perhaps one is hoping it to be like the others in the franchise. Chris Rock's performance was stellar considering his background, SLJ.. left a lot to be desired.. The whole movie honestly left a lot to be desired. Adequate character build up, adequate pacing, adequate violence/gore, writing etc. One thing did irk me. Kramer's ideal was for reforming people. Here the ideal is taken to a broader sense in that its to reform a system, however the mastermind behind these traps use the classic "live or die, the choice is yours" motif, all the traps are in situations where they just end up killing their victim and not give them a fair chance to win their deathgame. Perhaps that was intentional... but it doesn't have the same motivation. It feels so forced and disconnected from Saw/Kramer that in all honesty, if it didn't try to be years after the events of the Saw series and its own thing about a cop serial killer who believes he's doing justice and right in the world, I feel it would be a much better film. It under delivers the impact we've come to expect, plays it too safe and tries too hard to be its own thing while attempting to stay true to it'd roots... it just fails. Not enough character dynamic build up, and an ambiguous ending that leaves you wanting more and left feeling disappointed. Spiral has potential, but never hits the mark. If you're a Saw fan, it'll be hit or miss. Personally, you're better off streaming/renting and if you're a fan or completionist, then maybe buying would be worth it. Otherwise, you're not missing anything noteworthy.

A twisted, bloody, clever and wickedly entertaining physiological edge of your seat thriller. It's my favorite Saw movie by far. It's bone-chilling, funny and packed with clever twist and turns and tricks you expect from this series. A heart-stopping and shocking ride packed with solid performances. Chris Rock gives a powerhouse performance. Samuel L. Jackson is terrific. Director, Darren Lynn Boseman returns to the series to give his beat slice of the horror yet.
