Does it have a clip to stay up when not in use?

Yes it does. The locking clip that prevents the slider to open can stay in place to allow you to just raise the bar. If you place the bar about the midway point on an eight foot door you have to collapse the bar because it will be too long to clear the top of the door.

We have an old sliding glass door which slides open on an outside track. Can this bar work on this type of door?

Whoever installed your sliding door either installed it backwards or installed the wrong door in the first place. You might be able to fix it yourself if the door panels can be switched, remove both doors and place the NON/FIXED door on the outer track and move the sliding door to the inner track.

If this security bar is in use, how easily is it "unlocked" in case of emergency, e.g., fire? Is it difficult or time-consuming to disengage?

It would take less than 1 second to disengage this lock, this lock will not slow you down in an emergency. This lock is a great feature to any sliding patio door. We have installed one on our last two homes.

The description says it automatically locks. How? I purchased and installed this and can't figure out how to make it lock automatically.

Yeah, saying it locks is a bit misleading. I'm sure what they mean is that once the bar is in place the door can't be opened, so it's locked without actually locking the door.
