Not really games, but still great!
These are not "games" like you might imagine. They are simply interesting math problems. It's a great resource!

This is an Older Version of "Teaching the Common Core Math Standards with Hands-On Activities" by the same author, Muschla
I would recommend the more recent book for ideas and exercises that map well with the new common core standards. However, this book has a few interdisciplinary exercises that interest me, and I decided that some of the worksheets are more simple, and this could help exceptional learners who might need more time, or more practice, or more simple activities that teach the same concepts. It's the interdisciplinary examples that I really like; for example, add and subtract to get a number, and then match the number puzzle's name (John Adams) with an interesting history fact that matches the number. If you know your history, you can get the right answer without math, but if not, then you can solve the problem correctly to get the correct matching history fact.I do find the problems more simple in nature than what is required of the current common core standards, but the techniques can be applied to new problem sets which you would have to create. I like it, but I like the new book better.

Not Games
I like this book and highly recommend anything by the Muschla's. But this is a book of worksheets, not games. It does contain entertaining and challenging worksheets that are useful in the classroom. I more often will use their Algebra Teacher's Activity Kit or the Geometry Teacher's Activity Kit.

These are not "Games", just worksheets.
I have used some of the worksheets in this book in my mathematics classes. However, I bought this book because I thought it would contain some ideas for games that could be brought into the classroom to get students out of their desks, perhaps putting away pencil and paper, or at least doing activities that were fun for students. Instead it's a lot of worksheet type activities that sometimes just have a funny drawing on them, or just have a cipher at the bottom that allows students to check their work by seeing if their answers correspond to letters that spell out some didactic sentence.By far, most of the "activities" in here are problems and worksheets that are not different from resources I already had. The book is, quite simply, mis-titled. Not all of the worksheets are bad, but it is comical to think that any of these are going to excite students. My students are more excited by counting aloud by sevens and seeing how far we can get as a class than by anything in this book.

no games, few motivating, none exciting; some challenging
I certainly read enough reviews to know I was not ordering a book of math games, but I thought it would be a book of interesting, motivating puzzles and challenges. There are a few of those in that book, but for the most part it is simply a book of practice worksheets on a variety of topics. Some of the worksheets have interesting twists, and a few more have an answer bank that will reveal an acrostic such as "All your answers are correct," but too often a worksheet is simply a list of problems to solve.I would call none of these worksheets games, and less than a third of them puzzles.

Good worksheet book for additional practice - middle school level
While the title is misleading, I found this book a good way to get additional practice in my middle school math classes. The worksheets offer some "puzzle" type problems and "real world" word problems. Students like the worksheets and the format of them doesn't make it feel like everything is on top of each other like worksheets often do.A good supplement to any classroom

writing on the pages
I was shocked to see that what I thought would be games were actually worksheets and that a lot of them had already been filled in by someone. I was very disappointed with this purchase.

Did not like this resource
Did not like this resource! "Games" is misleading as its designed as typical pencil and paper activities. Who needs more photocopies in math class?

Publishers not playing the game
So what is a math game? I would have said it was something which is more fun than a photocopied worksheet. I would have said it was something played by two or more competitors. I would have said that it was almost as much fun to watch as to participate in. I would have said it was a "treat" to end the week or the term. Unfortunately, this book does not contain that sort of material. It's simply 180 photocopiable worksheets of varying quality. Some of them are good ideas, some of them are "bog standard" but really none of them earn the title "game". A sadly disappointing book to be, frankly, avoided. A genuine book of usable classroom games involving maths has yet to be found by this reviewer.
