Simple Skin Beauty
As a dermatologist, I often discourage my patients from buying most "self-help" books that are intended for the general public because so many of them are either oversimplified or overly complex. Most offer limited, and, at times, misleading information. Many adopt a self-serving manner, selling products or trying to prove that their point of view is the latest "cure."Doctor Marmur's book, "Simple Skin Beauty", is a friendly, easy to understand, humorous guide that explains how you can clear up your complexion. It recommends sensible and economical OTC products, takes on and clarifies many confusing subjects such as the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer. She cuts through many of the myths of skin care treatment.Readers will learn which treatments really work and which are wastes of money. She is not trying to sell any miracle potions or cures; rather, she has written a completely objective evaluation of all the legitimate treatment options available.I can honestly say this is no less than the finest and most objective layperson's book on skin care. It will serve as an invaluable resource for my patients and for me as well. I will have several copies in my waiting room.Dr. Goodheart is the author of Goodheart's Photoguide of Common Skin Disorders, Diagnosis and Management and Acne For Dummies.

Helped A lot
This book is good for people who want good skin, but don't see a dermatologist. After reading this book I applied the principles and got healthier skin that is optimal in looks and health (unless you have lots of money and can afford more advanced techniques ... and she talks about that). I quote from it: "by reading this book, you have virtually spent two weeks with me in my practice". I feel that is not an inaccurate description of how I felt after reading the book. It does for skincare what "Woe is I" does for English grammar. If you're looking for a guide with practical, simple information, or if you've been confused about the different messages you get from magazines/articles, I would highly recommend this book. It's even an enjoyable and informative read. Dr. Ellen Marmur talks like a normal woman who happens to be smart and educated. She is a dermatologist and has the experience, both as a doctor and as someone with skin herself.

This book was okay, not keeping it
I had expected more. This book covers too much and too little at the same time. Overall it wasn't very helpful to me. I found information in direct conflict with things I have read by other dermatologists also. Every one has their own opinion, but this physician speaks alone on most of the issues she is at odds with others on. The most prevalent thing she speaks of, and it is repeated so often there is no doubt, is the need to wear sunscreen. Unlike other authors though, she actually does tell you why and in a way that makes real practical sense that I went out and bought and usually now wear sunscreen even though it is winter. With that being a big point with her, I must say she was successful in getting another person to wear it.

A complete guide to skin care.
Objective and wonderfully honest, Doctor Ellen Marmur clarifies subjects that may induce us to confusion. Here are some interesting points you will find in her book:1) The bare essentials: Your facial cleanser (p.59), Your facial moisturizer (p.69), and Sunblock vs. sunscreen (p.79).2) Can I use my wife's skin care products? (p.89)3) How do I need to adjust my daily regimen for my dark (African-American) skin? (p.90).4) How to read a label (p.109).5) Five shocking facts about skin cancer (p.161)6) Difference between miracles and marketing (p.276)7) Conclusion: "... Wanting to look attractive (your personal best) is a healthy aspiration, and this psychology of beauty is powerful, but it has to be personal. The products you select should be what your skin needs (or an indulgence you desire), rather than something you are pushed into purchasing..." (p.354).

Read this and you need no other
I was a patient of Dr. Marmur many years ago. I had laser treatment after thyroidectomy and NO ONE (except for family and close friends) in 7 years has been able to tell I have a scar on my neck (great surgeon too for tiny tiny incision). She also got rid of a black freckle/pigmentation I hated for 20 years in 5 seconds flat on my lip and it looks like it was never there to begin with. I really like how this book is written because I love detailed, technical explanations - everything from the structure of your skin to how it functions to common chemicals in skincare products to what works and what does not work (by condition) are laid out. Since buying and reading it, I have not bought skincare products on impulse. I read labels and have learned what works. Particularly helpful with two little kids with very sensitive eczema prone skin and cannot seem to tolerate most baby creams. There are some recommendations for brands to buy and fortunately I can get them where I live now (London). Do realize you are getting top notch advice from one of the best in the field in New York for very little money - totally worth it.
