It's a single cable. The pic is showing the male and female sides. These cables are considered to be the top ones in quality for studio purposes. Tha't why the price is high in comparison with the regular cables.

Why is this called "quad conductor" when there are only three pins? I assume it is only for one channel. There are 4 pin stereo xlr cables...

In a regular XLR cable there are 2 core wires. In this and other quad cables they are doubled to four. This helps reject electromagnetic interference in long cable runs. This was pioneered by the phone companies.
