We do not recommend to place this bottle in the dishwasher, placing in dishwasher may temper with your insulation.

Q: Can this be used without the inside straw (and without leaking)?

We use ours without the inner-straw. It works just fine to drink from the spout (without the straw) and I haven't noticed any leaking.
