Size:Limited edition Our Shinto Saw Rasp is a 9” flat rasp made from 10 hardened teeth saw blades held together by rivets and features both coarse and fine sides with the teeth oriented to cut on the push stroke. The teeth are designed to help prevent clogging but also to be easily cleaned should the need arise. While the tool may seem odd to someone more used to traditional rasps, it works so well it will soon be one of your favorite tools. Suitable for any shaping task from rough to fine work.

Best Wood Rasp Ever
This thing is a BEAST. It removes more material in a shorter amount of time than any other rasp by a long shot. Some rasps grab/bind up mid-stroke, but you can almost always push through each stroke with this rasp, giving great control. It is a joy to use. I may try to fashion a top handle so I can told it both on top and bottom to work even faster with more forceful strokes. The fine tooth side gets you ready for finishing sandpaper if you finish with a gentle stroke. At $16, this thing is an absolute steal. Best $16 I've spent in a long time.I did slip and skinned my thumb and finger. It will take your skin off quick, worse that other files. I'd recommend wearing gloves every time.SUGGESTION TO MANUFACTURER: a removeable upper handle to give two handed strokes would be great (I'd pay for it). Also, a rounded version of this to help get in crevices would be welcome, and I'd buy it right up.

New and Better Rasp Design
It’s hack saw blades reconfigured in a criss-cross pattern to attack wood without leaving huge directional gouges. Simple but smart. Tears away wood in a hurry but leaves the surface even enough to minimalize sanding time. It’s has a rough and smooth side. The smooth side usually works good enough for me.It is for flat surfaces mainly like all other flat rasp. It’s a bar room brawler with tuxedo manners. One of my better wood working purchases in that it digs away wood in a hurry but gives me a better sense of control.Like other comments before, I wish it had a handle on both ends as it only cuts one way like most Japanese blades but it’s a great tool I am happy to recommend.Another good thing is it doesn’t clog up as much as my old, bigger toothed rasps.

Great tool
I have a $100 Japanese half-round rasp that I had previously thought was a pretty aggressive tool. I have shaped 3 guitar necks with my Shinto saw and I don't know if that expensive traditional rasp will ever see much use again.

If I lost it, I'd buy another one
I have a bunch of wood rasps that I use for building flintlock rifles. I got this one to trim my goat's hooves-worked much better than any of my wood rasps. After the goat, I tried it on a,wood project and was very impressed with the speed of cut and smoothness of finish. Not the right tool for hogging off 1/2" of maple, but this one is a keeper for removing smaller amounts of stock. Would like another one if I could find it in 1/2 round. BTW, the instructions diagram on the package are captioned in Japanese. No a big deal if you know how a rasp is supposed to work.

Buy It!
Effortlessly devours hardwood in a flurry of sawdust. It is very effective and easy to control with precision, requiring very little pressure. It make smooth, shallow cuts, which are easy to sand out. Im a bit disappointed with the build quality. The riviting on mine, is on the sloppy side and the handle isnt as secure as Id like. However, the way this tool is designed and constructed, these issues are no doubt an engineering challenge that would significantly complicate the build and increase price, to solve, therfore its forgivable. I have concerns about its durability, but at this price, its worth the risk for such a high performance tool. All its faults considered, its the best performing rasp Ive ever used. Ive completed a couple major projects with it and well gotten my money's worth, so if it ends up falling apart, Ill probably buy another.UPDATE:18 months of regular and often demanding use and this thing is still rockin'! I recently worked for more than an hour on an axe head, with a file. I was getting nowhere, so I put the Shinto rasp to it and in 5 min, had cut a clean, flat bevel on the blade. It shreds tempered steel, just like wood. More amazing, is that it didnt dull and still cuts wood like new. It was like the old Ginsu commercial where they cut rebar with it and then fillet a tomato. LOVE THIS MONSTER!

Saves so much time, very efficient rasp
I’ve been using the standard wood files/rasps my whole life. I mainly use them to clean up large mortise joints. This thing is the best, there is no messing around. I bought it a week ago and haven’t used any other wood file since.

The best rasp I have ever used.
This is the best rasp I have ever used, the rough side removes material fast but under great control, and the smooth side leaves a finer finish ready for sanding. Buy it, you won't be disappointed, I just wish they made these in half round and round, because I would buy those too.
