Frozen 2 [Blu-ray]

better than the first movie I think
I liked this one better than the first movie. Although the first was a good story, too, I was more able to get into this one and thought it was better written. The background art is amazingly gorgeous, and worth it all the more in Blu-ray. And I personally liked the songs a little more in this one. About the only complaint I have is a few of Olaf's things he says, especially a certain one, they could've come up with something less crass. But by far I really liked this second movie.

Disappointing
Six years after the iconic success of "Frozen", Disney finally delivers its long-awaited sequel. Does it live up to the clever storytelling of the original? Does it raise the stakes and further the characters?Uh . . . kind of? (Spoilers ahead)I'll give "Frozen II" credit - it is a phenomenally beautiful film to look at. The animation and visuals are just friggin' GORGEOUS, and at times transcend fairy tale imagery to become something downright mythic. An ice queen riding a water horse across a dark ocean to a frozen land of forgotten memories? WOW. This is a movie that honestly feels epic . . . . . but it also feels emotionally important, because although the story is burdened early on with some forced subplot and song numbers, Elsa and Anna are eventually forced to face certain truths - some satisfying, but others decidedly difficult. While the Oscar-nominated "Into The Unknown" is a memorable song, Elsa's "I Am Found" proves to be much more of a standout, and boasts some of the film's most visually breathtaking moments. It also feels very earned, unlike many of the other songs, and honestly seems like a larger moment of validation for Elsa's character than "Let It Go".Where my feelings become mixed about the film, however, comes with the song number I say tops them all. When Elsa sacrifices herself for the truth, her magic fades - and Olaf with it. After a pretty emotional goodbye, Anna is left alone, forced to reckon with the loss of her sister . . . and while the song is ultimately designed to be motivational, it's a very honest one. Suddenly this character is having to deal with the grim weight and pain of a loved one's death all by herself, and it's when the movie's lightweight mythic tones hit their darkest and heaviest. This would all signify a laudably bold and emotionally hard-hitting sequence that heralded an unexpectedly somber conclusion . . . . IF you didn't know the whole time you were watching a Disney flick, and that you know they're not going to kill a beloved main character. You KNOW Anna is going to save the day and that Elsa's going to come back, and of course, that's exactly what happens . . . . . so this dramatic moment the film takes to try and honestly address the subject of death feels ultimately kind of pointless, and perhaps even in somewhat bad taste. I appreciate the effort, but . . . . we KNOW Elsa isn't dead. It's a Disney flick. You don't doubt for a second she's gonna be saved. So why spend so much time showing a character trying to grapple with the permanence of death when you KNOW that death is only temporary? The message gets lost in the plot armor, so at best, the film is pulling its punches . . . . at worst, it's exploiting the false suspense of its own cliches to talk about something that could not be more serious. Remember the opening of "Up"? Remember how brutally sad that was? That was an animated movie with a large kid audience that treated death with the gravitas it deserves . . . . here, the subject is still taken seriously, but it lacks any of the impact it's supposed to because, as a Disney flick, it by default lacks the weight and permanence that death itself decidedly does not.Look, at the end of the day, "Frozen II" is a harmless movie and a decent sequel, not to mention visually awesome. And most people probably won't find the same problems with its story that I do . . . most people will expect a Disney fairy tale, and that's what they'll get. But the first "Frozen" wasn't just a normal Disney fairy tale . . . it turned historic conventions of the Disney fairy tale on their head, particularly with its interpretation of true love. It set a precedent for the sequel to subvert audience expectations a little, and to be more original within the confines of its cliches. So to see a sequel that sets up an opportunity to be far more subversive and truly challenging, only to inevitably play into cliche even more than its predecessor, is pretty disappointing at best.

Worth it for the bonus clips and gallery-cum-graphic novel!
Love Target Blu-ray exclusives ever since I bought the one for "Solo A Star Wars Story". Though you can watch Frozen 2 on repeat on Disney+, the Blu-ray does seem a tad sharper and what's really worth is all the bonus clips on it such as behind the scenes footage, deleted scenes and deleted songs. Plus the wonderful glossy filmmaker gallery booklet which includes Part 1 of the Frozen 2 graphic novel. Worth having if you are a huge Frozen fan and you have a blu-ray or 4K player.
