The best shoe purchase I've ever made!
I've never bought hiking boots/shoes before, and I've never bought Merrell shoes before, so I can't say if the quality is the same as it has always been, but compared to my new balance sneakers these are to die for! I was afraid that buying Merrell shoes was more of a trend for hikers, but now I know that it's because they really are quality shoes. I bought these because I knew we were going hiking in West Texas and I wanted to make sure I had good grip and support in my shoes. These shoes have the best grip I've ever experienced! I was able to walk on slippery, slimy river rocks and smooth rock, with loose stones on top, at a 45 degree angle with ease. Literally no slipping period. I felt confident walking on any terrain for our entire trip. We walked 20+ miles in a few days and I have to say that my feet did hurt, but not because of a lack of support. I think my feet were just tired. I'm usually pretty sedentary. My arches never hurt, and the support in these shoes is also the best arch support I've ever experienced. I have a very high arch so I didn't feel like the arch support was perfectly snug with my arch but it was plenty. The only thing that bothered me when I first wore them was the snugness of the padding overall. It felt great because my foot felt stable and well supported, and I had plenty of room all around, but the cushioning in the top of the shoe where I laced them up felt like it was cutting off circulation. So i just didn't tie them very tight. I also had thick socks so that didn't help. After a couple of days this went away. I also have to say that I have never been able to tie my laces only once. I have always double knotted, but these laces never ever came undone even with one knot. And I walked a lot. Up and down mountains and kicking up stones. I would definitely buy these again, and I'm planning on buying these for my teenage daughters as well instead of wasting money on Nike or NB which have no support and no tred!

Great Hiking shoes!
Bought these for a trip to Peru and these hiking boots were absolutely great on every terrain! We hiked through snow, pouring rain, gravel, rocks and sludge. Not only did these shoes require almost no break- in time but also were very comfortable, waterproof and looked great.Would recommend.

Good width
9w These are actually wide enough which some aren't. There is arch support but it is too close to my heel not much cushioning on foot bed, just a little, however the insole can be changed out easily. Superior grip on soles but I'm still wearing around house and deciding whether to keep, don't want to get them dirty. I dont like returning worn items. Room for thicker socks too. Feel very stable and don't rub on my ankle bones which some do. I could wear smaller size but want the toe room. Not cheap but what is nowadays.

I have always had a horrible time buying shoes
Shoes are rough with me. I find a brand I can use, and stuck wearing them for a long time; like Birkenstocks. I have a very wide toe base ("Flintstone" Feet) and very narrow heels, plus both feet have different length and width. It was enough to drive my poor parents crazy when I was growing up. I can't wear "cheap" shoes and even shoes like NEW BALANCE (the boots are too narrow of toe box and actually bruise the top of my foot and I am flat footed), which aren't cheap might still not work.I got these shoes on 7 day approval, I had to. There is absolutely no way I buy any shoes I am not 100% sure will work, because the repercussions are serious foot problems. Well, I found a new shoe company I will be buying from: Merrill. The base is STABLE, not ankle rollovers. The width and depth of the toe box are exactly right, I don't have to worry about standing on these, walking or any other activity that can actually cause damage to my feet. I wear thick socks to make SURE the shoes would fit and work. I used to hike, and fit is everything. I am not sure of these like the old NIKE ACS shoes (my favorite) have steel shank base or not, but what I noticed is that there is NO STONE BRUSING after wearing these. If you have arthritis and feet problems these shoes not only fit the bill, but are comfortable and light to wear. Not all crossover tennis/hikers are. These also come waterproof as well, but I really didn't need that option to increase the probability of shoes not fitting, being too rigid, and being too heavy. And the price was amazing. They fit to size and the soles don't need to buy extra inserts as I have had to in the past due to not enough cushioning and poor insole construction. These are keepers.
