Edifier P17 Passive Shelf Speakers Pair of 2-Way Speakers with Built-in Wall Mount, Perfect for 5.1, 7.1 or 11.1 Sides/Rear Surround Setup, Requires Amplifier or Receiver for Operation

I am currently using these in the living room of my apartment. They just arrived. I am powering them from a FOSI Class D power amp and a FOSI tube preamp.My initial audition music was Cantate Domino, a classical recording from Proprius Records, and Ana Caram - Rio after Dark, a Brazilian music album from Chesky Records. I’m very familiar with these recordings, so I know what to expect on playback.I have no subwoofer, and the speakers are sitting on cardboard boxes adjacent to the TV, for the time being. I had to crank up the bass on the amp, to get decent lows from the speakers. I cranked up the treble too, but I am almost 70 years old, so, if you are younger, this may not be needed.I am very happy with the sound from these speakers. They seem to be very unfussy to set up for decent imaging. They sounded very good, and quite uncolored for speakers costing only $140. I would say they are about as good as some British mini-monitors I owned 40 years ago, which cost about $700, if memory serves. So, we have come a long way in speaker design and materials in the last few decades.These speakers are not perfect, but I don’t know anything better for $140. All my best to you, on your search for the perfect audio system.Added:Just put on Tocatta and Fugue in D by Bach. This is on YouTube, from the largest organ in the world, in Atlantic City. This organ was built in 1932, and has over 33000 pipes, in 8 pipe lofts, in an arena style building.My living room is about 15x25 feet, with the speakers adjacent to the TV on the long wall.I cranked up the volume. This organ is bone crushing, and the organist is very good. You can crank up the bass until it sounds right. I was real, real happy with these little speakers. And, it was plenty loud enough. At the end, the organist hits the coupler, turning on all pipes. The loudness jumps by about 3 times. These little speakers held on, with no appreciable distortion. Amazing speakers for $140.Can’t wait to add a 15 inch subwoofer.Thanks for reading. The P-17s really do deliver the goods.More:These are on either side of a 55 inch TV, which is on the floor. Speakers are just below the top of the screen. I changed speaker position from vertical to horizontal, tweeters on the outside. I wasn’t entirely happy with the imaging. So, went to horizontal, tweeters on the inside.Bang!!! Perfect imaging, with great soundstage depth. Love it!!!Anyone coming in here and listening would think this is a much more expensive system.Give it a try. Your milage may obviously vary.

First, I just want to say that I'm COMPLETELY happy with my purchase! I got much more for my $$ than I really expected. I've been an "audiophile" (OK, self-proclaimed) for many years and outside of a couple pairs of another brand of speakers (start with a 'B' and one pair I've had since 1982!!) I've never been as satisfied with a pair of speakers. I've spent a LOT more money but these babies are simply awesome. Setup was a snap (what's so difficult about setting up a pair of bookshelf speakers???) and I was enthralled with the first notes they produced. Shoot, these would be a great buy at regular price! But since I got them for 30% off, I'm really loving them!! Seriously. Great speakers, nice and heavy, solid as rocks, clear highs, nice "moving" lows. They're the perfect speaker for some great jazz like Oli Silk. They're a perfect speaker for my study. I've been watching and waiting for the opportunity to purchase these and now that I have, I'm thinkin' I shoulda done so a long time ago!!Thanks for the great speakers!! It’s all about “Location, location, location!” 90+ percent of performance or sound quality ‘problems’ and displeasure come from speaker misplacement. If you have a decent set of speakers, such as these, take a little time to understand how to position them for your environment and play around with placement. You will find the sweet spots and be sonically rewarded.These are handsome speakers with a decently unbiased (read flat) response. Lush projection and immersive soundstage for such a small footprint.10-20 years ago you would have had to purchase something in the prosumer category to get *quality* room-filling sound like these provide.The speakers feel solid and weighty. They are missing a hint of the upper-mid range to my ear, but nothing too noticeable and it’s to be expected.Overall I am very pleased with these. I have them hooked up to a vintage Pioneer bookshelf component system and they get louder than I want ( and I like them loud) just past the 1/4 mark on the volume dial. I almost bought a comparable sized pair of Klipsch bookshelf speakers but I’m glad I went with these.Because the bass driver is only ~4”, they don’t hit the really low bass notes in some hip-hop or other bass-heavy music which is to be expected, but still sound good. They really shine for classic rock, alternative rock, jazz, symphony, ambient.

These speakers are very small, so as you might expect, the bass end falls off but mid-range and treble are quite clear and, of course, dominate the sound. I am into low volume easy listening and I go for depth and clarity and with these, the mid-high range is quite good (gets an A-). But even with "elevator-type" music, the bass (subtle as it is for my listening needs) is just too dim, muddled - actually, even with turning up the bass volume. Ability to pick up on individual instruments (in its functional range) is above average, though. Important in today's digitized instrumental music.So, you'll either need a sub-woofer with these or, as I will do, just use these with my subsequently purchased higher end three way speakers which have a 15" woofer. (My old 3 ways were great in the bass range but lacked clarity in the treble department, so I presume these speakers should be a remedy for that). Sub woofers, in my experience are too inefficient such that, even at low output (volume) they tend to overwhelm everything else.These speakers are very sensitive to placement and aim. So experiment with that before you decide whether they fill your needs or not. They throw a good deal of sound, btw, without much distortion, so are suitable for a large room - surprising given their size.
