Castle: By the Author of The Way Things Work

We just love this book. Illustrations are really good and the storyline too. Perfect for our homeschool. Will get the whole series!

As a long-time fan of Macaulay, even as a child, I somehow managed to miss out on this one. It is deserving of the acclaim. The illustrations are classic Macaulay, detailed and mesmerizing, and the text is devoid of embellishments yet captivating. This brings back great memories of 70s/80s childhood summers stocking up on similar books at the library…Macaulay, Biesty and Virginia Lee Burton. Easily worth the price and then some.

My 13 year old and I read this book together. He absolutely loved reading about the history and building of the castle. He has another larger DK book on Castles and as we read told me about his previous knowledge on the topic we were reading about and expanded our discussion. The images (drawings) being b/w are a perfect match so that details of the castle stand out. After reading this story, we watched the accompanying PBS special Castle by the same author. The movie is s a perfect tag-a-long going into further details and highlighting real castles and showing the details that were discussed in the book. To follow up on the book/movie, my son is now building his own brick castle. We ordered a kit and it includes everything to make little bricks from molds and then directions on exactly how to build the castle. I highly recommend purchasing the book, movie and castle building kit together if you or your child is interested in castles and/or medieval studies. All three provide great discussion, for both visual and auditory learners as well as a hands-on experience.

This book kept me utterly fascinated as a kid and pre-teen. Absolutely love this book

Great book but was for a younger person then what I originally thought. I probably should have looked at it more closely before my purchase. Not disappointed, really, my own fault I didn't look into it a little better. This might be great for the 8-10 yr olds but not my teen.

Excellent general overview of castles - how's & why's of choosing a site, materials and sequence of construction, how the different parts functioned, etc. - with detailed pen & ink illustrations to explain things visually......

Deserving of all the book awards it has received!

Me decepcionó un poco el libro pues esperaba más ilustraciones. El texto (en inglés) está bien, pero no para mi hijo de 8 años. Esperaré unos años para sacarselo. Pensaba que no era tan «enciclopédico» Espero que haya sido útil mi valoración
