The Toukan family is one of the last remaining soap factories in Nablus and still makes castile soap using traditional methods in a historic factory, accoridng to a recipe that is 150 years old. The three natural ingredients, olive oil, water, and caustic soda are mixed in a large vat which is brought to a boil twice a day for several days. Once the slurry is ready, the soap is transferred into buckets and carried to the factory floor where the soap is poured into large slab molds. The slab is leveled and allowed to harden for weeks. The hardened slab is then lined for cutting, each bar gets stamped with the famous **Two Keys** logo using a hammer, and then the slab is cut into characteristic soap blocks. The blocks are stacked in ceiling-high columns to promote air circulation and drying for a month or more. Finally, bars are wrapped by hand--the fastest soapers can wrap up to 1000 bars per hour! Each bar weighs approximately 150 g / 5.3 oz.

These are artisanal, hand-made soaps from ancient Nablus; made in an old factory, using traditional methods and natural ingredients. As such, their shape and packaging don't have the polished finishing that you would expect from industrially-produced soap. In other words, they are charming; in their appearance and quality. If you want artificial, polished, and perfumed, these soaps are not for you; if you want natural ingredients with hand-made quality, you will be happy with what you get.

Nablus' Handmade Soap is Top Quality
In 2013, I was privileged to visit the Nablus soap factory itself, where I purchased three bars. This lovely handmade soap became a family favorite! It is so pure we use it to wash our faces, in fact, and it rinses cleanly without leaving any residue. I like, too, that because it has no scent, family members with allergies never need to worry. Anyone who is interested can find a short video online now that features the making of this soap, a special treat. I recommend this soap highly, and I am delighted that I can buy it through Amazon as well as in Nablus!

Great natural soap
Great natural soap made from olive oil. There is a little natural smell when you first unwrap the paper but that goes away with the first usage and you will not smell anything but cleanness on your body. I use this soap as a substitute for shower lotion and shampoo and no longer use traditional soap and shampoo with huge list of chemicals.
