Made running inspirational.
I put off watching this movie for a very long time ( I respect athletes, but running always seemed...... not interesting enough to make a movie about). This movie feels more like a play than a "Hollywood movie"It deals with serious subject matter (religion, national identity, teamwork)no 'action scenes' or anything to make it more exciting. The plot is told through character development. The plot is, 2 British men (One Jewish and one Christian) go through their own character arc and the movie / play climaxes with them both running in the 1924 Olympics in France. The movie can feel stuffy at times ( a group of elderly British men say "we are the committee", and one of the runners is shamed for hiring a trainer, seems like a small issue when here in the modern world we have steroids..... a really big no no). This movie is best enjoyed by the type of audience member who thinks the best part of the movie is the subtle details. Each runner struggles with some inner turmoil ( their own world views and what they want) and competing as a runner. In the start of the movie we see a group of British men running on the beach with the movie theme playing ( I knew that song long before I saw the movie, as with most people). It showed the importance of having a common goal, despite our difference. The sound track is made by Vangelis, same musician who made the sound track for the original Blade Runner.I was conflicted if I should give this movie 4 or 5 starts. I liked it and now have a better appreciation for runners. However, I feel like if I had watched this movie in my 20s, I would have been bored. I had to mature and learn the appreciate subtle story telling to really appreciate this film.

I wait for them to replace the product which became defective upon removal from package.
Upon opening the DVD container it appeared to be perfect, but as I pressed the center latch and began lifting the disk from its package, it broke entirely thru one side and partially up the other side of the center hole.I have sent the seller a copy of their packing slip with their satisfaction guarantee along with a picture of the broken disk with a request that they replace it with a working disk.Since Goodwill is a trusted seller, I expect a favorable response.

A great British film and the score is in a league of its own
This is a film I remember from my youth- for no other reason than now very famous scene of the main characters running on the beach and of course the music. This time, as an older man, I really enjoyed watching the two main characters running for their quite different reasons but equal in their desires to win. This film is full of camaraderie and mutual respect (especially Harold's respect for Eric) and fair play, some of the qualities that make me feel proud to be British and of course wonderful sporting moments. Watching Eric win his race at the end, while we listen to his words playing in the background, as he speaks about how he feels when he runs and the connection he feels to his faith. and the music....some of the best sporting moments you will see in any film.Watching this again especially the final scene, as they run along the beach, it just makes me smile. one of many classic Brirtish films that I love and well worth seeing. (I also think my three-year-old son runs a bit like Eric, when I am trying to get him to take a bath)

He that honors me, I will honor.
I've been hearing all my life that this is a very overrated picture; I understand why'd they said that, nevertheless, me being a fan of sport stories and optimistic messages, found it like a really satisfying view. It's a simple message, and it's good, besides there's the iconic opening scene with the sublime music by Vangelis. A must watch.

Inspiring...
Having seen this film before I wanted to purchase my own copy. Each time I see this movie it lifts me. The direction was brilliant, as was the acting. Ian Charlson played Eric Liddell with real conviction. The music score by Vangelis so captured the feel of the story. It's no surprise that it won the Academy Award for best picture.

EDWARDIAN SPLENDOUR
This Blu Ray disc arrived just after the 2012 Olympics had finished. I have seen this film many years ago but the 30th anniversary edition does justice both to the score and the pictures.Broadstairs looks magnificent in its Edwardian beauty, no doubt the beaches were less polluted then than they are today and the hotels looked less faded. Most of the actors have gone on to become household names in Britain whilst some are sadly no longer with us.It is a joy to view and the haunting theme ever more glorious at it was revived in the Olympics. The attention to detail and the dialogue are superb, enhanced by the new technology used to restore it.A film to keep, the have done magi with the sound track best listened to in the DTS sound format.Rule Britannia!

They don't make 'em like this any more!
Well, they do, but the heyday of British film-making having somewhat fallen away from the 50's & 60's in the face of the ever increasing might (and finance) of Hollywood, this was a welcome reminder that we could still make top draw films. The subject of the film is well enough known that the only other comment I feel the need to make is that DVD quality is just fine, with the tiny caveat that I found the sound somewhat lower than any other DVD I have. Once I turned it up about 20%, no problem!
