MSD 8226 Ignition Coil Dual Connector, Red, HEI Style

Replaced my fuel injectors and with this new coil it runs great.

While I don’t think this coil will make my old square body any faster, it definitely solved my spark issues when I installed it. My tachometer feed was failing from my 1989 HEI coil, and this coil is a perfect replacement for the original, and appears to be of similar or better quality. Looks speedy too. You should have a good idea of how to replace one of these on an HEI truck, because the attachment bolts used by GM are a bit fiddly. The coil itself is no different in shape or size to the stock one, and has no bearing on the difficulty of installation. Just watch a few YouTube videos before you try to install this, and make sure you have the required wrenches before you start.

Perfect for my application. Don't let the troll reviews fool you, or the nutjobs who say it's different from the old style 8226 and won't fit. I replaced my old 8226 with this unit and took the time to take measurements. They're the EXACT same size in every dimension except thickness, and these new 8226 units are actually 2mm thinner, so ANYWHERE that the old 8226 first so does this newer style, which is a direct fit replacement for the factory part. It doesn't hit the intake, it goesnt hit the distributor, and it mounts directly to the factory front and rear brackets. Anyone claiming it doesn't is doing something wrong. As for the design, of course it changed, guys, come on. The old style 8226 came out in 1987 (check your '87 catalog, page 33) or maybe even earlier. Technology has improved (greatly) since then which is why these new style coils look slightly different, but the for is 100% the same.

I bought this coil as part of a complete ignition upgrade in my Chevy pickup. It installed easily and it functioned flawlessly at first. It turns out that I got that one in a million coil that was defective. While my wife was driving my truck it lurched a couple of times and died. I didn't suspect the coil until I had eliminated everything else (Who would suspect a brand new coil?). Tested it and, sure enough, the coil was dead. The MSD warranty is good for 1 year. I contacted MSD and they had me send it in and they are in the process of sending me a new one. The bad side of their replacement program is that it will take about 6 weeks for my new coil to arrive--bummer! MSD has an excellent system and the little extras that make the installation go smoothly are all available from them. They produce a section of harness that plugs in so that the new coil works without any cutting or splicing. I'm very happy with the entire system (with the exception of the coil failure) as my truck runs much better on the MSD than it did on the stock ignition. As far as the coil failure goes, everyone has good days and bad days too. I'm certain that the replacement coil will be just fine.

Coil works great. Noticeable improvement in idle and low speed response versus stock Delco coil. Hopefully more reliable too. Tough to install though but that’s not the fault of the coil.

Coil installed easily. Had to drill rivets out of old bracket to reuse with this coil. Was glad it comes with 2 bolts for the bracket. Installed in a 90 brougham 5.7. I can feel a improvement but I also did wires, plugs cap and rotor. I will keep my old coil just in case...
