Songs From The West Coast

Give it a second listen....
I've followed the old queen since the very early days of 1970 and have supplemented the worn out vinyl with CD copies of everything significant up until 'Sleeping with the Past'. I've just spent a week looking after an apartment of a friend and since I was offered the run of the place, checked out her CD collection. Spotting 'Songs from the West Coast' I had to give it a try and have to admit that first impression was 'avoid like the plague'. The following day, I gave it a second hearing and astonishingly became completely hooked. It may have been the Paul Buckmaster arrangements that caught my ear, but since that second listen I played it incessantly for the remainder of the week. The owner, much younger, would have been appalled having bought it on the strength of the Robert Downey Jr. video for 'I Want Love', no doubt she'd have failed to appreciate the impact the album had on me!The Ryan Adams influence may have helped and the Bill Bottrell effort was clearly recognised by EJ in the credits. If you're a long time fan from the old days, buy this. You may have the same initial adverse reaction as me, but it grows - quickly. Just listen for those Buckmaster strings and it will all just fall back into place.

Excellent album
Back tracking through a number of artists early work and this album from Elton John really is a little gem with not a poor song on the album. So many singer songwriters around these days but when he is on form there are still very few to match him.

One of Elton's Best Records
"Songs from the West Coast" is by far my second-favorite Elton John record following Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. This record is easily forgotten as it blends in with the rest of his career, there weren't a lot of singles from the record and this was released after a period many critics consider to have been a creatively dry spell for Elton. This record has some slower songs that speak to me personally and that I enjoy listening to very much, like The Emperor's New Clothes and The Ballad of the Boy in the Red Shoes. It also has the melodically perfect and impeccably beautiful ballad I Want Love and a Robert Johnson-esque track about selling your soul to the devil called The Wastelands.Even the tracks that sit between the big standout successes are fantastic. This record is a slower pace for Elton, which he had been doing for many years by this point, but I think it really works best here. This is, in my opinion, the best record he has done from 2000-2016. It was his most inspired time in that period, I believe.

"Elton & Bernie Reunion "
Elton john 's 2001 release, Songs from the West Coast was kind of a reunion for Elton co/writer Bernie Taupin, most the mid 90's Elton worked for Disney, The Lion King, Aida, with Tim Rice, and also sort of a reunion with his former living band mates, Davey Johnstone and Nigel Ollson, and the string arrangements by the late Paul Buckmaster. The track starts out with a kind of witty ballad, Emperor's new clothes along with Stevie Wonder''s harmonica on Black Diamonds. Mixture of witty ballads and poignant, sad ballads such as, I want love, The boy in red shoes and the closer This train don't stop here anymore. KInd of a musical biography of Elton and Bernie, their lives and careers where they have gone. It was great to hear the old band Nigel and Davey with their fabulous harmonizing especially Nigel, but also the fine drumming work of Matt Chamberlin. Definitely one Elton's finest efforts and probably the last one with Paul Buckmaster, as you hear the fade out of This train don't stop hear anymore. It's in 2016 that Elton, Bernie, Ray Cooper, Davey Johnstone and Nigel Ollson still making music again.
