Love this Tascam, easy to use, versatile and great low tech/hi tech combo! Nothing breaks flow more than dealing with computer software when recording AND being the musician. With this I record to internal SD, then mix on computer with low, so best of hi tech low tech worlds. Multiple output mixes is SO useful, on and on so many great features.

The media could not be loaded. Got mine ‘Used-Acceptable’ and showed up brand new in its original box and works perfectly, saved $200 would definitely recommend

Overall, the Model 12 and 16 were both same outcome for me personally. I have purchased them both and was both times very happy with the quality but I was caught off guard by the "virtual" tracks 15/16 as well as a delegated BT 13/14 channel (with 1/8 in option) and no eq or aux capabilities. So, in the end it was really 12 input channels on the Model 16. This is my only complaint about the board - it should be clarified a little better in description on website for consumer.

I'm giving this 5 stars, with a few nit-picks. First, this mixer sounds GREAT. I think I had forgotten what a true analog mixer sounded like because when I first hooked this up, I thought my ears were playing tricks on me. It just sounds really fat and beefy. I used this with my 4 pc band and initially, I just used it as a standard mixer because I was a little nervous to try the recording portion out at a gig (I was worried that it might crash and interrupt my live performance). Turns out I was worried for no good reason, as I did put the unit into record mode on the same performance and everything worked great! I recorded 12 inputs at once...no issues. At the end of the gig, I played back the tracks through the stage monitors and did a quick mix. Best "board tape" we've ever had!! I even went back a couple of days later and fixed a few "flubs" by punching-in on the tracks that needed fixing. Only nit-picks are that you have to use the control knob to scroll back to your punch-in point, and I am not particularly in love with the color scheme of the mixer. Some people complain about the fact that you can't assign different channels to different TRACKS, but I see this as a "plus" in that it keeps this thing very SIMPLE. Channel one is track one, channel two is track two, PERIOD. Plus, this is really more of a live mixer with built-in multitrack recording than a multitrack recorder that can also be used for live sound.

After looking at the model 12, I decided to go with the 16 for the HDDA preamps and analog summing, which are both really great features for how I use it. I didn't notice that unlike the 12, this model lacks midi connectivity, so time syncing with external gear (other than a laptop) will require work-arounds. It's odd that the software side has this functionality but the hardware lacks the ports.Also, other reviews have mentioned the ability to bounce, but this feature (as users of other MTRs would expect) is oddly missing. You can bounce a stereo master mix but you cannot combine specific tracks into a new track or even copy one track to another. To do this you would need to patch a submix out into the input of the destination track. I dont see how this would've cost tascam much to implement on the software side.My final issue is the lack of an FX return. To use outboard effects, you must return your signal path to an available track on the device. In some senses this is nice, because you have more control post effects, but you are sacrificing tracks to use external effects.Unlike some of the other reviews, I have no problems with the processing time after recording completes. I think overall the mixer and recorder sound great. I just think that there are certain features missing that could really improve the workflow here.

Overall the Model 16 is a nice mixer. There are some weird contradictions in its design. I won't get into detailing these because I think overall this unit will work for people looking to record their bands. The recording section is flat clumsy and not really functional for anything but recording a live mix. Sure you can set punches, do light editing, bounce... but it takes too much time scroll through menus and everything loads, stops and starts very slow. Kills work flow. Most people will move to DAW to do recordings with alterations. I wanted to be able to use both effectively for different purposes. One of the biggest issues I had might be a small issue for others... the phones volume works in conjunction with the Mains out. When you mute the outs to hear the mix over the phones it cuts them off. Solo buttons would be nice on a mixer of this price and the CR outputs should be independent from the Main. A bit redundant to have both if they aren't independent. I don't write reviews very often but I thought I should given the shortcomings I found. I can see how this mixer would be good for people that just want to record their bands live and hear it back. The mixer sound and quality are decent and it is pretty simple to hit record and play back your recording through the board. If that's what you're after this board might be for you. The onboard effects are mediocre at best with no real parameter tweaking... other than time and they are VERY noisy which really surprises me. I sent one back because of the noise and the second one was exactly the same. Just half baked product IMO that could have been great with just a little more R&D.

The sound of this device is terrible. I have other recorders and had no issues with the sound quality. The owner’s manual is the worst I have ever seen. It makes you jump from one page to another explaining one thing. Then it never gets to the point. I can not recommend this device.

Product works great, HOWEVER, be aware you have to pay for shipping to the repair center even if it is under warranty. I had this unit 8 weeks and channel #2 went bad. Parts and labor are covered. It cost me A LOT ( $91.00) to ship it to the service center.The nearest one is 200 miles away from me. Just a heads up. If it is under warranty, they do pay the return shipping. If you live close to a service center not a big issue.
