Surprisingly relevant in 2024
If you are a fixer or maker and love music, get this book.If you’re working on gear that’s more modern than what is in the book, read the actual text anyway.Every strategy and principle is useful today. There is even the updated version that discusses surface mount electronics. Finally, it really does live up to the title, the author's conceptual flow really does empower you to be successful without a schematic diagram.

One of a kind book
This book is perfect for someone without alot of experience. The author imparts his years of knowledge about what to look for when fixing certain electronics. Probably a more experienced tech already knows the techniques discussed in the book. The author uses alot of examples of troubleshooting actual devices. I found myself skipping these sections as they are units that are hopelessly outdated. But the instruction imparted about what testing tools to use and how to use them in real-world situations in priceless. The book is great for gaining insight into how to go about troubleshooting electronics like a pro. The downside are the examples using outdated devices and the somewhat repetitive ordering of some of the sections. This book could use a rewrite to restructure the chapters and also toss the info on obsolete devices such as tape decks and analog TVs.

Very Informative
This book is for someone who is well experienced with a multimeter and scope. The only issue that I had is that some old components are hard to find replacements for.

From the previous century
What I find positive:- helpful schematics- practical hints in the text- simple illustrations for meassuringWhat I find negative:- very outdated. The blurb on the back cover "completely updated" is not true (3rd edition 2004). TVs still have fly back transormers in this book- I miss structure. Information is repeated numerous times and randomly spread.- Missing appendix (sources for spare parts, safety regulations, some helpful tables)Conclusion: there are better books available. Reading it is very time consuming with low efficency.

book is outdated
the book is outdated, focussing on electronic devices which are not customely used any more. Examples are Video Recorders, walkmans et cetera. This book deserves a major update with current (e.g. smartphones and laptop computers) and future products (IoT)
