iPad for Artists: How to Make Great Art with Your Tablet

iPad for Artists
I really like this book. It has recommendations for several apps that the author feels are the best for drawing and/or painting. She explains what the features of the apps are as well as more detailed information about using them, pros and cons, etc. She also gives reviews about several styli. She then goes into detail about features such as layers, which are usually a bit more complex within an app, to the "undo" button, which is pretty self-explanatory. She tries to keep these universal, though she might explain them within an app. She also gives information about how to draw different styles and types, such as cartoons, portraits, pencil drawings, landscapes, and using vectors and paint, to name only a few. She really wants to help the reader understand the digital art medium. There are some great artist spotlights that appear later in the book that demonstrate these different styles and the mediums used. At the beginning, she talks about the iPad itself, and how to choose what will be right for you. She shows her iPad art apps (and photo ones--she gives a big of info at the end of the book on these, and how to organize your work, do slideshows and more complicated work, etc.). I found this to be very helpful and plan to continue using it as I have just purchased an iPad. However, some of the apps have added new features, completely changed, and of course, the iPad itself has gone through many changes since the book was written. I feel most of the material is still useful at this time. I hope that she will do a 2nd edition of her book soon to keep up with the quick changes in technology. Great for beginners in any type of art to pros making the switch to digital!

Well written and illustrated.. BUT it's really just a BEGINNER book.
For a beginner this is a great book, and the "negatives" are more against the publisher, as the author did a great job for the beginner audience...The book goes over several Apps, including pros, cons and even some step by step "instructions"... It needs more detail on using the programs for more advanced "iPad Artists", because of this lacking I think it's more a beginner book that helps decide on what Apps to use and do some basic art techniques on them. However since it is advertised for both the beginner AND more experienced "iPad Artist" I see this as a negative, they should advertise it as for beginners only, and not seek to sell it to the more experienced iPad Artist, whom like me will be disappointed in the amount of useful content. So it cost me $11 plus shipping to have it point out one other App I should include in my Art Apps, and I was only able to find one technique that was useful that I didn't already do/know.Also the fact that it is not offered in ebook formats (Kindle or iBook), which for a book about a device that is known for that seems a little out of touch for the publisher...So really the author gets 5 stars, the publisher 1, well maybe 2 (they recognized good work). So publisher please market your books to the right audience and not to just sell a few more to those who don't really need it...

Skeptics please read!
Don't let the neg reviews scare you away from purchasing this one! I almost passed it up because of some reviews saying this was for beginners. And yes, while some of it is for beginners just learning about art apps, it has a lot of useful information even for the experienced artist. True artists will love the art in here alone! I am an experienced artist and after skimming through it there is plenty I already knew BUT there were some things I read that led me to say hmmm...hadn't thought of that and sparked another creative venture in me! Oh Snap! The pages are vibrant and colorful! There are some exceptional pieces of artwork in there that inspire me to try it for myself! I love to copy what I see! I found out about a few apps that i wasnt aware of but, If you're looking for detailed instructions for a certain art app you may want to reconsider as it mainly gives a summary and short tutorials of a few apps, which is why I gave it a 4star rating. But as I said, you may learn a few things and appreciate some great art. The price has dropped too which was another incentive for purchasing. In my opinion it's definitely worth buying!

Finally!!
I bought my iPad specifically so that I could learn to make art on a computer. Alas, I could not figure out how to do much of anything. Everything that I could find was centered on manipulating photos (which is fine if that is what you want to do). The apps that I bought came with no instructions whatsoever. I looked for books or classes but nothing was available. I checked out the local Apple store, no help there either. The iPad became a glorified game center and reader. But this book opened up the artistic possibilities. It is Clear and concise. Excellent pictures and explanations. Step by step it takes you through the process, gives you ideas and options for your art. It reviews different programs (many of which I had already purchased - but now I can actually USE them!) and apps, different tools and Technics. It goes beyond merely re-purposing photos and helps you really create your own art.So far it is the best book about actually creating art on the iPad currently on the market. Frankly, it is the ONLY book of its kind on the market.

Great for commercial artists
I really like this book, as well as the style of art that the author creates. Other books get into more of the "fine art" aspect of drawing on the iPad but the examples in this book are more of a "commercial art" or humorous illustration style, which is exactly what I, and a lot of digital illustrators, are looking for.Don't get me wrong: there are some "fine art" examples in this book, such as painting a still life and a landscape, as well as introductions to the work of other artists. That said, some of the examples I like best are a caricature of Abraham Lincoln, a Dragon, a semi-caricature style portrait, comic art, children's illustration and fantasy artwork. The book even touches on drawing vector artwork on the iPad.One criticism is that the section on styluses doesn't address the subject of pressure sensitivity. Overall, however, this is an excellent book for artists of a more commercial nature.

A bit out of date
Nice book for beginners, but showing it's age. Published before iPad Pro release.

A great way to start
Inspired by Hockney's exhibition of digital paintings, I had downloaded Brushes, and later Sketchbook Pro, but in the absence of meaningful manuals, I just couldn't get started--until this book came along. The book samples the major programs and most useful techniques. This means, of course, that you don't get all you want from any one program, but you do get the hang of figuring out how to get a similar effect with the programs you do have. The book's tutorials also cover a wide range of artistic purposes, from cartoons and graphic design to very painterly portraits and landscapes, and sophisticated drawings. None of these tutorials offer a quick fix; as with any painting medium, it then takes plenty of hard work and application to gain mastery. As a postscript, I gave my 10-year-old granddaughter, who had been enjoying creative collage programs on her I-pad, a quick look at how Brushes works before going off to fix dinner. In no time flat she'd created a colorful painting on her own using a variety of brushes for different effects.
