A Book About Seeing
I really enjoyed his stories that went with each image and read the whole thing over the course of a couple days. Most of the images are presented in a horizontal orientation and are large enough to take in.If you’re a fan of Jay Maisel, you’ll appreciate this book.

Another Gem
Having read other books authored by Jay, I once again get creative inspiration from this one as well. I especially like the statement he makes about cropping in the shoot to avoid spending your time in front of a computer and not a camera. Reading his books after viewing the videos on KelbyOne just deepens the messages and helps the application of Jay’s technique.

Some Inspiration
Some inspiring thoughts in this book. Helps the photographer to get back to the basics of composition and think of seeing through the viewfinder. Jay Maisel has had a long and illustrious career with many high profile clients and many great photos so his insights are most useful. Many of us, of course, won't have the opportunity to shoot in exotic locations with art directors or models but Maisel's approach to seeing is helpful even to those of us who never get to leave Podunk. A worthwhile read for sure.

I enjoy studying the shots
Jay Maisel's work is always inspirational, and his latest book is no exception to that rule. I enjoy studying the shots, letting their full impact resonate with me. I wish the text was a little meatier, though - I find many of his ideas to be interesting when introduced, and I'm ready to read on in more detail about how they translate to his photos, hoping for clear coincidence between his photos and text. Just as I start to engage with his idea or concept, though, it ends. In general, I find his text too brief to fully flesh-out the ideas he introduces with his characteristic wit and humor. I love his work, respect and envy his eye and talent, but find the text to be too limited to fully explore the ideas he introduces.

In introspective look!
I purchased this book due to a clip I saw on YouTube pertaining to Jay Maisel. Jay, who is a giant in the world of photography, has been, and still is, my favorite photographer. He is our modern Ansel. After reading the book, it gives a great deal of introspection, revelation and insight into why certain photographs were taken, the situation or surroundings. Jay isn't beholden to the restrictive guidelines that impede most photographers who believe guidelines are gospel. Stepping not just outside but beyond conformity is why his work is seminal and will be for a great deal longer.

Many books are quite good about the technical aspects - most in fact
I know little about professional photography, but I am passionate about it. I am not that interested in the holy trinity - aperture, speed, light sensitivity. I am interested in mood, light, ambience and intuition. My teachers have been myself and books. Many books are quite good about the technical aspects - most in fact. But the subjective aspect is illusive and mysterious. It is quite personal. Some books help in this respect. Reading Jay's books, personally, gives me that mood. Thanks Jay, even though I do not know you. If you are into feel, intuition and no BS, read this book.

Not a "how to", more an interesting reminiscence.
I liked it, a nice easy to read that you can pick up and put down. The anecdotes are interesting whilst still passing on some points of all interests to maybe try or keep in the back of your mind. I bought this on Kindle so the photos are not in color or of good quality, but you still get the point, and save a lot of money....

A great book about what photography is really about
A great book about what photography is really about. I am an advanced photographer that has won competitions or placed highly and have stopped going to photo clubs because of the emphasis on "what camera I used, what aperature, what shutter speed, what lens I used. I studied painting and worked hard at watercolour and nobody asked what brush I used or paint. They are tools to achieve my vision. This book is wonderful for exploring why you take a photo and how to capture the real thing - emotion. A great book to enjoy a glass of wine or cup of coffee over from a master photographer who communicates the art of photography in a surprisingly friendly unpretentious manner. A great book for inspiration - Brian

four stars
An interesting book but not initially one of my favorites. However, upon rereading it my appreciation has grown and perhaps I am now worthy of the work where I wasn't before. Recommended.

Great book!
I was not expecting a lot from this book, mainly because the cover was drab. As for the content, it is just fantastic. Jay Maisel has a great way of making us see and think as photographer should. If you want to think better as a photographer, buy this book.

Each section is a lesson. Very specific very interesting. I loved it. First book after a while that I have finished reading and at the end didn't realise it's over.
