Does the fabric slip under it at all?

Not at all ...It sticks to the surface of the machine and I've not had fabric get caught.

Are they made of acrylic?

No, spongy - I like them a lot , the thickness especially , but they did not have the staying power, I ended up going slower on my machine and using painters tape to help with my quarter inch. I also switched from the plastic 1/4 in foot to a steal foot. I am not brave enough to cut the painters tape to the desired thickness, I understand some people do that and also use post it notes. A coworker uses this brand you ask about, she has not had the issue I have had.

Do you remove this from the machine if you are going to sew "half-Square Triangles?

Gently pull the guide up from the machine bed. If there aren't any threads stuck to it, you can use this once more. I lightly "tap pressed" my guide strip on the side of the sewing machine until I needed it again.
