If you have a Leaky Gut you should read this book!
I bought this book because I have been having some health issues which have now been diagnosed as leaky gut. My doctor didn't give me much guidance on what to do and I kind of felt left in the dark. After doing lots and lots of research I stumbled upon this book and so far I'm happy with it. I haven't actually started doing the gut flush plan itself but it has done two things for me thus far:1)Put all the valuable information in one book in one place(some of the info is new to me and some it I have read in other places)2) armed me with the information I needed to know to ask educated questions to my doctor(also easy to read and understand)I think those two things make this book so significant for anyone dealing with leaky gut or any kind of "gut grief". Information is empowering and no one will care more about your health than you will so being informed is the best thing you can do for your health. I have found this to be true in my own life and has in fact helped me to get better. Every diagnosis I have had I have suggested doing the appropriate test. My research helped me pick up on my gluten intolerance, my low b12 and now my leaky gut. I think this book will help me take charge and heal. Now for those of you who are on the fence about buying this book because you feel like this is just information you can get on the internet for free...some of the medical information you will find online but you won't find the gut flush plan (or any plan worth trying) online and the depth and specificity of the information you won't find online. Although it goes in depth its still easy to read, entertaining, relevant and gives you a well outlined plan. I haven't started the plan so I can't speak to how well the plan works but I will say that the plan is outlined in a way to set you up for success. There's an explanation for why you will be eating certain things which for me is important. I like to know why I'm doing something in order to do it fully commit to doing it.I think everyone should read it and its an easy read with a lot of good info that everyone could benefit from. I hope this was helpful!Update07/13:Despite my glowing review I did not do the gut flush plan. I found it overwhelming. I think no amount of guidance a book gives you can actually make you ready or able to follow any restrictive diet. However the fact I didn't actually follow plan doesn't mean the book is bad. There is very good information in here and explanation for the steps of diet and foods that are eliminated. I think its one worth having in your collection. But of course read everything with a grain a salt. Decide what works best for you and if the plan is something you would like to follow. I personally don't think a one size all fits diet is effective but I think this book has a lot information and good guidelines that can help you shape and build a diet/lifestyle that work for you. Again, I'm not knocking the book. I read my original review and it was so glowing and optimistic that I felt like I needed to add an update to make this review a little more well rounded.

Yes YOU Need this!
I have most of Dr. ALG's books and love all her stuff and I mix N match frequently. So, I bought this book last year sometime and wanted to really try the program before I put my thoughts on 'screen' :)Many other reviewers have indicated a dislike for the promotion of supplements in the book. While I understand where they are going with that issue, it does not mean that the program does not work if you cannot or do not use these EXACT supplements.I've tried the program both ways. Both work. True, using the Unikey supplements is easier and faster because you don't have to take the time to figure stuff out. You just buy them and off you go.But, if you have an aversion to getting the Unikey ones and want to supplement using your own version ... by all means go for it :) The book even points out that if you don't want to take the Unikey supplements its ok. Just make sure that for every supplement the program indicates, make sure you get one. Example: if you don't want to use the Unikey powdered probiotic then take a different one, just make sure you include them!Personally, I found it much easier to just get the Unikey boxed set because its designed for exactly the timeframe you need to do 1 flush - especially the first time around! Now, on to the idea that yes, everyone needs to do a flush of this type. Why? Because we eat so completely different than our grand parents did and we have a lot more 'crud in the pipes' so to speak.Again, you can tailor this to your lifestyle. If you eat pretty clean you can do this every 6 months or 1 time a year and be fine. However, if you eat a lot of fast food, processed food and are sick a lot then you may want to re-think why that is. This book could be helpful in narrowing down what the issues are. Some reviewers think the book is a bit too graphic. Not so in my opinion. It just gives an overview of the general types of parasites and what larger problems they cause. Now, if you are someone who REALLY wants graphic details on what is living in their body then you can get the expanded version which actually lists the microbe, where it lives, what you get them from and what type of damage it does to bodily systems. This larger volume is called 'Guess What Came To Dinner'. And what an eye opener that one is!All in all, its another high quality book and program that we have come to expect from Dr. ALG and I've referenced it for many months now. Best thing is that it fits easily into the rest of the Fat Flush programs.

This diet plan works.
This is a really good book for people who know a little about eating healthy already. Gittleman gives reasons for why she suggests certain supplments and removing gluten and coffee from your diet, but for the average person, there is not enough of an explanation. Most people have been coffee drinkers for a long time, and the typical American diet is food we can get at a supermarket. A lot of the menu requirements can NOT be bought at your local market. If I were going to make a few constructive comments about the book, I'd say that more information is needed for "incentive" to go seek out expensive alternatives at a health food store. Instead Gittleman focuses on germs. She contradicts herself in regards to antibiotic resistance as well. On one hand, she tells you not to overdo it with antibiotics, and on another, she has you bathing all your fruits and veg in bleach. Parasites and germs live in a normal gut synergistically. I understand why she stresses flushing because you have to heal the gut and get your intestinal flora back in balance. However, apple cider vinegar is a better bath for fruit and veg and doesn't leave a chlorine residue on food. It's all about balance. On a more positive note, the recipes are good and easy to follow and there is a wealth of information on how to get healthy for the lay person. The book should also stress "organic" meat and does not say so in the meal plans. Antibiotics in meat are also an issue to getting your gut rebalanced.

I enjoyed the book and found all kind of interesting information ...
I enjoyed the book and found all kind of interesting information regarding digestion, supplements, foods. The book touches a sensitive subject parasites, yeast and superbugs. We think these are part of other country issues not North America. Wrong. They are so present here, too plus we travel extensively bringing back all kinds of pathogens. So many times health issues and even chronic illnesses abate once doing an anti-parasitic treatment. The book was an eye opener for me and I'm glad I found it. Being an avid traveller I've got sick few times from food during my trips. I never felt the same (fully healthy) after. Even the initial acute stage of sickness went away I kind of struggled with a poor health after and was revealed I was the host of microscopic parasites like amoebas and Giardia Lamblia. This happened 8-9 years ago. Presently, three months into a parasitic treatment coupled with a good diet, probiotics, enzymes and other various supplements, I can say I feel I'm on the road for recovery. It will take a long time to be back on track but with the help of a naturopath and this book I know I will succeed. So, I really recommend the book.Ann Louise Gittleman is one of the tenth top nutritionists in US and her books and youtube videos are good and worth attention.
